Label/Format: Atlantic – Original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format with matt, very gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both in supreme condition, ultra fresh, clean and highly attractive with only a mere couple of tiny spindle traces. This delicate record plays beautifully and appears hardly even played or handled.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderately scarce especially in this gorgeous condition. This was a late ‘plum’ issue with the label design and catalogue number changing within the same year. This a quite difficult record, that has some very quiet passages, clean originals that still offer beautiful clean sound are at more of a premium. The same for the cover, many are badly rubbed and worn, this one very clean and fresh – cover-protection has ensured that.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A brilliant late album on the Plum Atlantic format, this was Dave Crosby’s first solo album, falling in line with his fellow musician friends Steve Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young. Peaking at 12 in both the United States and UK album charts this mini-classic was justifiably popular and remains his finest ever moment as a ‘solo’ artist. Not that solo is really the correct term here, as he is joined by the cream of San Francisco artists of this era. In no particular order; Crosby performs with all the following: Graham Nash; Neil Young; Phil Lesh; Bill Kreutzmann; Jorma Kaukonen; Grace Slick; Gregg Rolie; Joni Mitchell; Mickey Hart; David Frieberg; Henry Diltz; Paul Kantner; Michael Shrieve; Gary Burden; Stephen Barncard; Robert Hammer; David Geffen; Ethan Crosby; Laura Allen; Jerry Garcia; Jack Cassady, Ronald Stone and Elliot Roberts – as you would expect the backing and performances are nothing less than immaculate, a blend of musical brilliance seldom bettered on an album of this type. Vocally, Crosby was inspired and never sounded better than here, spiritual, powerful and convincing, a man at the peak of his powers. The backing musicians are allowed space to perform and this is an unselfish record. This is an amazing copy from a private prestige owner and it appears hardly even played. An album that is rarely seen or heard as such and one that does it near maximum justice. Few music lovers could fail to be moved by this.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt and smooth surfaces. The card is quite soft and fragile and is seldom seen without often significant wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the Philips style date-coded inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clean, fresh and hardly rubbed or creased with no sticker issues that blight so many. Just a tiny trace near the top fold and odd corner tip, they are rarely seen much better. A beautiful front and graphic of a sunset with Crosby superimposed – all seen to near maximum advantage.

Cover Back: Superb again, and devoid of ring wear which is unusual. The highlight on Crosby’s forehead is correct, NOT a rub.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as made and impressive as-seen. The host of musicians that feature all on view.

Top Edges: Straight with minimal rub traces, these mostly on the right tips.

Bottom Edges: Mild fairly patchy rubbing on the front edge, as this is folded slightly off-square, this is near unavoidable on vulnerable storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Any hint of thickening again minimal and very light, the record enters on the back edges, the front is closed and machine cut.

Spine and Text: Fine and very light patchy rubbing on the bottom fold. Solid, straight with minimal compression, folded sightly off-square, also retaining deep colour without the usual light fading. The text still strong as seen with any clipping minimal, tiny and light. Such a difficult cover to find with such little edge and spine wear, overall, this has possibly the least I have seen.

Corners: The corner surfaces show little wear at all, the actual edge tips have rubbed mostly on the right pair. Excellent shape mostly retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: Lovely piece of vintage art, and seldom will it be found a great deal better on the main surfaces. One to please many collectors, details seen on my large high resolution photographs.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this copy includes it’s original Philips style polylined inner sleeve that has only very gently aged with mild natural discolouration of the white paper and edge seam adhesive. It is date-coded 0371, so manufactured in March 1971 dating this album perfectly. Barely creased at all with two neat untorn window circles, the lining very fresh and clear. All edges naturally intact with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): an impressive visual example that is very clean with lovely shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface blemishes are very light, super fine and faint, these seen with scrutiny under bright light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually an age-defying example that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Atlantic record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault at all. This a challenging album and few will ever play anything close to ‘silent’, this gives it a fine shot. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few originals will match or outperform this I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played little at all and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
