Label/Format: Atlantic – Original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format with matt, very gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both look impressive being fresh, clean and highly attractive with only a tiny few light and faint spindle marks. This delicate record plays very well.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Moderately scarce. This was a late ‘plum’ issue with the label design and catalogue number changing within the same year. This a quite difficult record, that has some very quiet passages, clean originals that still offer very fine clean sound are at more of a premium.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A brilliant late album on the Plum Atlantic format, this was Dave Crosby’s first solo album, falling in line with his fellow musician friends Steve Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young. Peaking at 12 in both the United States and UK album charts this mini-classic was justifiably popular and remains his finest ever moment as a ‘solo’ artist. Not that solo is really the correct term here, as he is joined by the cream of San Francisco artists of this era. In no particular order; Crosby performs with all the following: Graham Nash; Neil Young; Phil Lesh; Bill Kreutzmann; Jorma Kaukonen; Grace Slick; Gregg Rolie; Joni Mitchell; Mickey Hart; David Frieberg; Henry Diltz; Paul Kantner; Michael Shrieve; Gary Burden; Stephen Barncard; Robert Hammer; David Geffen; Ethan Crosby; Laura Allen; Jerry Garcia; Jack Cassady, Ronald Stone and Elliot Roberts – as you would expect the backing and performances are nothing less than immaculate, a blend of musical brilliance seldom bettered on an album of this type. Vocally, Crosby was inspired and never sounded better than here, spiritual, powerful and convincing, a man at the peak of his powers. The backing musicians are allowed space to perform and this is an unselfish record. This is a very fine copy, the cover has some edge rubbing – and few avoid it – and the odd blemish on the back. But the record is clean and plays very well indeed. I never tire listening to this wonderful and album and this record gave a pleasing account of itself.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt and smooth surfaces. The card is quite soft and fragile and is seldom seen without often major wear. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the Philips style date-coded inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Apart from small tip rubbing and traces near the edge folds, this attractive looking, classic front cover has little else to fault. It remains clean, fresh with deep colour and no creasing.

Cover Back: This similar again with just a trace of a sticker residue mark to the left of the highlight on Crosby’s forehead (look very hard to see it). The lack of ring wear on this back is a major plus.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Practically as made and impressive as-seen. The host of musicians that feature all on view.

Top Edges: Straight, flat and flush with light to moderate rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Again straight, these edges have less rubbing that above with little on the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Some thickening to the back edges where the record enters, the front is closed and machine cut, the is still quite sharp being naturally protected by the back that is a tiny fraction proud.

Spine and Text: There is patchy light to moderate rubbing on the top fold with a little clipping of the text here-and-there, but most remains intact as-seen. Solid, straight with minimal compression, folded nice and square.

Corners: Light to mostly moderate tip rubbing, but quite soft card, this is so hard to avoid, but most is seen viewed end-on, the main faces actually have little. Fine or slightly better shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A lovely piece of vintage art, and with the main large surfaces still impressive, it should please many collectors, but clearly not for the highly discerning or cover purist.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: this includes it’s original Philips style polylined inner sleeve that has only very gently aged with mild natural discolouration of the white paper and edge seam adhesive. It is date-coded 0371, so manufactured in March 1971 dating this album perfectly. Barely creased at all with two neat untorn window circles, the lining very fresh and clear. All edges naturally intact with no repairs. Just a four digit retailer’s reference number written neatly in pen near one corner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): a fine visual example that is clean with nice shine and solidly pressed. Surface marks are light, mostly wispy and faint, these seen with scrutiny under bright light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a splendid example that plays impressively and should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic Atlantic Plum original plays even above it’s fine visual grading with little to fault. This a challenging album and few will ever play anything close to ‘silent’, this gives it a fine go. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available originals will outperform this significantly for sound I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played modestly and the wispy surface blemishes possibly the result of dry cloth ‘cleaning’ – whatever, these light surface marks do nothing. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic album. It will prove difficult to find better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
