Description

This offer is from your friendly non-commercial vendor Michael (La belle Ville de Québec) (username MichaelMcCubbinQuebec).  My musical tastes over the years run to a fairly wide variety of musical styles including, in order of importance: folk (especially Canadian), not so much traditional but more of the singer-songwriter and progressive types emerging in the 1960s and 1970s and its tradition since; rock, especially progressive / psychedelic (hence excluding for the most part trite clichéd mainstream pop-rock of the American style); and smatterings of “world music”, jazz and big band, blues, soul, and classical.  What I most like to listen to, especially today (much less likely to be among the LPs I am selling), is fusion music in those areas, that pushes boundaries and resists classification.

To see the other albums I am listing, go to http://shop.ebay.ca/michaelmccubbinquebec/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25   Of course I’d really like it if, because you and I have taste commonalities, you listed me under your “favourite sellers and stores” under “seller info.”  Comments or questions are welcome; email michael.mccubbin@hotmail.com

All offers are authorized releases from those who legally created and distributed the items (unless otherwise indicated and in accordance with the law).

DAVID WIFFEN

1981 self-titled

Canadian singer-songwriter modern urban folk

VERY RARE, SOUGHT AFTER ALBUM

Plastic sleeve, M-

Fantasy Records / Phonodisc PHE 6015

David Wiffen is an important part of the Canadian folk singer-songwriter mythology and history.  He was certainly one of the most respected and influential among such performers in the 1970s and 80s.  I had the good fortune to see him live at small folk venues, on a couple of occasions in Ottawa, when I was based there between 1972 and 1986.

He put out few albums, and limited his playing for audiences.  Performing for him became psychologically painful and had negative implications for his health.  His "day job" was driving a limousine.  His incapacity to share his music to its potential was one of the tragedies of Canadian folk.  In the Canadian folk scene, everybody knew him or of him: he was very highly admired, indeed, considered a demi-God.  (A competitor on eBay has a very good concise history.)

Wiffen was an extremely talented songwriter and had a remarkable baritone voice -- perhaps the best natural singing voice in modern folk ever.  He had several hits, some of which are on this album.  Various other performers also had hit with songs that Wiffen performs here.

This is an absolutely indispensable album for any serious collector of Canadian folk singer-songwriters.

Sound quality and vinyl     M/M-

At my recent listen I assessed the background vinyl noise as very low.  I find no marks of any kind on the vinyl.

Cover and disc labels   VG++M-

This having been one of my most cherished albums, I have kept it in a plastic sleeve since I bought it new.  Hence the cover is in great condition.  There is mild art wear on the bottom edge and no wear on the spine or top edge.  There is no corner wear.  The art work on the front and back is in new condition, with no ring wear at all.  There is no writing or other markings on the cover, not even my name!

Overall, the album is in wonderful condition for a discerning collector.

NOTE:  The shipping is free on a second album, with savings of $2.28 on handling.  See my listings at http://shop.ebay.ca/michaelmccubbinquebec/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25  You could get a 2nd album for as low as $1.01 S/H included!

BILLING:  When you buy this album please await my personally authorized bill that I email you, as opposed to what may be an “official” looking, but usually wrong, eBay bill generated right after auction end.  eBay screws up the bills, often not including the actual shipping cost (frequently not included or shown way too high), and not including handling costs.

Consensus rating criteria:  How do I determine ratings like VG+ and so on?  What I try to do is go by the criteria given by several of the credible big sellers; separate for, firstly, sound and vinyl quality, and secondly, cover, dust cover and disc labels.  I’m trying to use a consensus scale based on the credibility of those criteria and their completeness in terms of pertinent aspects of what is being rated.  It is often hard to distinguish between one rating and the next one up.  In such conditions I decide on the impact that the noise would have on the appreciation of the song.  I will ordinarily report what the case is to you in my opinion.

I include in handling costs the following (Canadian figures):  1) envelope cost, $2.28; 2) listing costs; 3) $1.00 miscellaneous costs as a rough estimate of overhead use like computer, printer, stationery etc.

Repairs:  Many of the LPs I am selling were repaired, reinforced or cleaned by me, usually many years ago when I bought them ? I am not an expert in such things.  If there is need for further repairs (e.g., gluing separated sides) I leave that to your tastes and/or expertise.  Since I am recovering many dust covers and some plastic outside sleeves from albums being disposed of as impossible to sell (I list less than a quarter of my albums), when albums are missing dust covers, or if they are faded or torn, I will insert a better, appropriate one, and perhaps a plastic sleeve.

My name is Michael (username MichaelMcCubbinQuebec) and for health reasons I have no choice now but to sell most of my many beloved albums collected over almost 50 years, mostly in Toronto and Ottawa prior to 1990.  I try to provide truly honest and critical descriptions of what I am selling, so you will know what you get.  These albums need to find appreciative new homes to further the fertilization of music.  Happy listening!
