Description

On offer is a 1969 LP by DAVY GRAHAM called HAT on DECCA, catalogue number SKL 5011.

Davy Graham’s fourth album for Decca strips the instrumentation to a trio – with Danny Thompson on bass and Johnny Spooner on drums. Hat has the usual esoteric selection – with, amongst others,  tunes by Billy Strayhorn, Paul Simon (2), Purcell and Willie Dixon (2) – and is noted for the rapport between guitar and bass, anticipating Danny Thompson’s later partnership with John Martyn.

The record grades as VERY GOOD PLUS, with intermittent clicks and pops and surface noise between tracks. The audio quality is excellent throughout, and the imperfections don’t impede listening pleasure too much. It looks better than that, and visually would grade as near EXCELLENT. This is the first STEREO pressing in FULL FREQUENCY STEREOPHONIC SOUND.

The sleeve is VERY GOOD+. The laminate front has slight creases and a bigger one front top left. The rear shows ageing and is lightly worn but no major problems. The dye-cut circular hole reveals an ’S’ for stereo. The spine is slightly worn but all legible.

Matrix numbers on run-out groove:

Side 1 – ZAL 8991P-1W

Side 2 – ZAL 8992 P-2W

The original blue STEREO poly-lined bag has “SKL 5011” printed on a small label in one corner, and is generally scruffy, with two small holes in the poly lining. Also the poly lining has come slightly unstuck, which means that taking the LP in and out of the sleeve is slightly irksome.
