There are some bands that live up to the hype, and others that don't. I think this lot - Day One, are in the former category. It's been described as a legendary album by some. I'm not sure who is doing the singing here, but whoever it is tries hard to emulate Frank Dimino of Angel. An that's not a bad thing, considering this does come across with strong Angel overtones in places. Strangely enough, Day One consider this to be a Mini LP, yet there are ten tracks on board. Mini or Maxi? You be the judge. Sure, the songs are great with chug-a-lug guitar rhythms, fancy solos, and the keyboard work from Fusician maestro Craig Otte should be enough to convince AORsters that this is worth every cent of its increasing commodity value on the Ebay market. The production isn't bad . When reviewed on the AOR-FM.com website, Bruce mentioned that this album was supposedly recorded live, but he couldn't find any evidence of it.. nor could I. What's the story? I wonder if they mean't live in the studio?
Day One kick off with a instrumental 'Time And Space', nothing more than a romp through a series of keyboard effects. Chugging into round two is 'Take It Slow' a pulsing affair akin to Angel. The solo section with guitars and keys is very good. The title track is next, and it's probably the album highlight. 'Waves Of Time'. Then keys are rife throughout 'Early Warning', with a Angel type chorus. Things improve for 'What Else Can I Say' - with instrumental interplay, though the song with bass line pulsing through the arrangement. 'Listen' is another great track while the moody 'We Will Survive' has some good moments too. Perhaps the most pompiest moment here is 'Promise Don't Last Long' - a load of keyboards to boot, a cool solo, and an appealing arrangement. Yep, Day One is a rare, but it's not over powering rarity of legend. It's still a good album for collectors of AOR and pomp, and as mentioned, Angel fans should get value out of this album.. If you are only interested in buying and selling this disc to make a quick buck, then all power to you. Unfortunately, you have to find a copy first - that is the hard part!
