For collectors of Library Music * and those looking for samples.

* 'Library Music' - music intended for use as backgrounds in film and television; albums like this were never released to the public.

This 1970s LP in the sought-after Music De Wolfe series is well-known among beat collectors as one of the prime examples of Library Music breaks and beats. De Wolfe's idea was to keep the instrumentation sparse and concentrate on the drums and percussion (and to a lesser extent the bass guitar). As a result the LP is packed with sections of open drums (both on intros and popping up again in the middle of tracks). The music other than the drums is not the most memorable, it has to be said, but this one is definitely all about the drum breaks.

Noteworthy tracks:

Speed Trap - intro of fastish, driving, open, funky drums (basic kit overlaid with ride cymbal and timpani).

Track Record - open drums at start (mid tempo, shuffling, funky, with overlaid ride cymbal and bongo drums).

Fun Seeker - starts with bongos, joined by slowish, precise, funky drums then bass and flute etc.

Hair Raiser - excellent funky drum intro again (joined by overdubbed drums, ie extra hihats, conga touches and so on, after 4 bars).

Inflation - simple. loping beat on this one (open drums again on the intro).

Hard Hitter - fastish bongo intro then driving, frantic, funky drums and bass, joined by flute etc.

No Way - starts with a mid tempo shaker pattern, joined by light tapping beat, then bass etc.

Three's a Crowd - jazzy, 6/8 time, brisk; nice interplay of drums/bongos/guitar stabs/flutes etc.

Big Dipper - another shuffly, funky pattern - this time dominated by bass, but with plentiful short breaks of drum rolls.

Decisive Action - insistent, solid, funky drum intro (with light bongos).

Challenger - slow, Latin Bossa Nova style rhythm (incl. open drum/percussion sections); nice mellow Latin style track.

Superdrive - starts with bass guitar on its own, joined by bongos and frenetic, cymbal-driven drums; drama style incidental music or 'chase' scene.
