This is A RARE ORIGINAL 1958 U.S. PRIVATE PRESS 1-SIDED PROMO ONLY 7" 45 RPM RECORD containing the song titled 'It's 1200 Miles From Texas To Palm Springs ' performed by Dean Martin. Catalog number is HB-2160. B-side of this 45 is blank.
This single-sided 45 has the above named song performed by Dean Martin, and written by Jimmy Van Heusen with lyrics by Sammy Cahn and Ray Ryan to promote the 22nd annual Desert Circus in Palm Springs.
The Desert Circus started in the late 1930s, and 1958 was the first year of many that the Desert Circus saluted a state, in this case Texas. The ultimate goal was to salute all of the then 48 states, concluding in the year 2006, though for some reason, they stopped throwing the party in the 1980s.
In 1958, Ray Ryan and his “Ryan’s Raiders,” made up of Mike Romanoff, Phil Harris, Jimmy Van Heusen, Roberta Linn, Trav Rogers, Frank Bogert, and six others, “invaded” El Paso, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston, Texas where they promoted Desert Circus vigilantly, including by the distribution of this record to local disk jockeys. When the Raiders realized their group was made up of an unlucky 13, they kidnapped actor Bill Gargan (They Knew What They Wanted, The Bells of St. Mary’s) and forced him to come along on the trek.
The Raiders traveled to each of these cities in a private DC-3 chartered by Ryan. The Grand Marshal of the event was Texas oilman Glenn McCarthy, selected by Ryan. Events included: a Bavarian Beer Festival, a “Texas night on the town,” staged raiding sorties against local bistros, a luncheon and fashion show at the Ocotillo Lodge, Kangaroo Court at the Desert Inn, dinner and dancing at the Texas Big Top Ball held at Thunderbird Country Club and of course, the annual Desert Circus parade down Palm Canyon Drive.
Condition of play surface is VG with a small amount of surface marks, none of which can be felt or will affect play, and one or two light surface scratched which can be felt and which may cause a few scattered light ticks. Label has some light brown stains and some contact wear as can be seen in my accompanying image.
