Decca SXL 2064/5 WBGv Ed1 Smetana ‘Ma Vlast’ Kubelik VPO

This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so.

Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included, with the permission of the publishers, where these are available.

RECORD GRADINGS (All 4 sides)

EXCELLENT

All four sides in this two record set are in excellent condition. I suspect they have hardly ever been played, maybe just side 1. All four sides are clean and bright and there are no spindle marks on the labels. The sound quality throughout is superb which is perhaps a reflection of the very early ‘Stampers’ on all four sides.

SXL 2064 (Sides 1 & 4) –

Side 1:  (ZAL4077-3G Stampers: Side 1, Mother 1 and stamper 4 (K)

The surface of side 1 is clean. There are two ½ inch needle marks in band 1 and a ½ inch scratch at the beginning of band 1. There is a 3 inch long mark that runs through bands 1 and 2. A number of spindle marks. A beautifully clean record but a side that has been played a fair amount. Ticks may repeat a few times, but the side is largely clean.

Side 4:  (ZAL4080-2K Stampers: Mother 1 and stamper 7 (G))

This side has also seen some playing. It has a light ½ inch scratch in bands 1 and 2 and several light fingerprints in band 2 and the run-in area.  There are spindle marks.

SXL 2064 (Sides 2 & 3)

Side 2:  (ZAL4078-2K Mother 1 and stamper 15 (BI))

This side has been played much less than the previous one. There are only a few marks on the surface. There is a 1 ½ inch scuff between bands 1 and 2, a ½ inch hairline scratch at the end of band 2 and some small fingerprints in band 1. There are no spindle marks.

Side 3:  (ZAL4079-3K Mother 4 and stamper 15 (BI)

This side is quite clean. There is a strange 3 inch circular mark in bands 1 and 2 and no spindle marks.

Sides 3 and 4 are later stampers than the ones on Sides 1 and 4.

COVER GRADING

SXL 6064 EXCELLENT

There is a little soiling of both opening edges where the laminate was not applied right to the edge of the card.

The binding strip at the bottom of the back has some signs of soil and there is some soiling of the top strip and of the inner edge of the right strip on the rear.

On the cover, there are a few places where the cellophane has separated from the colored cover. At the bottom of the front, there seems to be an area of micro-separation (see pictures).

The cover is clean, undamaged and only a little creased and minutely scuffed at the corners. The blue FFSS inner sleeve is clean, unmarked and undamaged with just a shade of age discoloration.

 SXL 6065 EXCELLENT

This cover is extremely clean. There is some discoloration along the opening edge. The corners have a minute amount of scuffing. The strips along the back have some minor soiling, not as much as on the earlier cover.

The record ring is visible as a slight discoloration on the rear cover and only the slightest of dirt marking on the front.

The disk has its blue FFSS inner sleeve which, otherwise is excellent
