Description
This is one of a number of vinyl records from the 1950’s & 60’s listed this week which we no longer listen to. Little played, the records are still in very good condition, the covers sometimes less so. This week’s Listing includes the 4 Decca SXL recordings by Wilhelm Backhaus of Beethoven’s Five Piano Concertos Gradings are based on the “Record Collector Magazine's Guide” set out in the eBay Guides together with notes about condition added. Extracts from the Gramophone Magazine review written at the time of the record’s release are included where these are available. RECORD GRADING EXCELLENT Whilst there are a number of spindle marks on both disc labels and some hairlines visible on the surfaces this unwarped record plays extremely well and is a pleasure to listen to. Side 1 plays very quietly with hardly any interference at all, just the occasional light pop or ‘dust tick’. There are no repetitive pops or clicks. The same is also true for Side 2, just an occasional light click or, very light pop until about two minute before the end of the third movement when there are 2 slightly louder Pops but I cannot see anything on the surface which would give rise to this. Maybe a ‘Pressing fault’ which, I understand from the Gramophone Magazine, was a frequent occurrence in the Decca records of the early 1960’s. Like most records of this age, it is probably over 50 years old, it would still benefit from a clean but, as it now is, it is a very enjoyable record to listen to. COVER GRADING GOOD The cover is almost undamaged, a ¼ inch tear and crease at the top right edge and two tiny splits on the label edge. Two of the corners are a little scuffed. The laminate is intact and not lifting but there are some crease lines in the laminate above the picture. The top 1/8th of an inch of the edge of the opening has discoloured because the laminate, when applied, was not extended right up to the edge of the card. On the letter B of Beethoven there is a small scrape which has removed a little of the red ink. The back is clean and almost unmarked apart from evidence of the ‘record ring’. Despite these criticisms, it is actually a very nice cover but I must make you aware of these small, not unsightly, blemishes. The Inner Sleeve, the original blue FFSS, is Very Good; undamaged, but with just a shade discolouration. I have no wish for you to be disappointed by your purchase. If you think the grading/description was unfair or unreasonable when you receive the record, you may return it and you will have a full refund of all that you have paid me. All I require is that you contact me within 7 days of its receipt to tell me you intend to return it, and that I receive the record in the same condition as it was when it was sent to you. MINT Record In brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality Cover In perfect condition, as are extra items such as thelyric sheet, booklet or poster EXCELLENT Record Shows signs of having been played, but with very little lessening in sound quality Cover Slight wear and / or creasing to the cover or its contents VERY GOOD Record Obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch Cover Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects GOOD Record Played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, and there may be some distortion and mild scratches Cover Suffers from folding, scuffed edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
