Conceptually, this seems like it would be an interesting album. Blackmore and Lord are fine musicians with classical influences in their playing, so Deep Purple backed by an orchestra should sound pretty cool right?

As you listen through the interminable intro of track one, the first thing you will wonder is this: Where is Deep Purple? Yes, the album begins with six minutes of only the orchestra playing fairly inoffensive classical music. Then the band enters, and the orchestra drops out. Repeat for the entirety of this near 25 minute opus. In fact, repeat for the rest of the album. You see, this album isn't Deep Purple playing with an orchestra, like Metallica's S&M. It's more like sharing a concert stage with an entirely different band, where you each trade off songs for an hour and twenty minutes.

So is the actual Deep Purple music on here any good? Well if you like generic, directionless blues jams, some aspects of this album will appeal to you. Gillian doesn't sing all that much, except on the album's closing track "Child in Time" and some other forgettable one. Child in Time, here preceding its eventual release on In Rock, would have been a prime opportunity for the orchestra to add to some panache to the band's sound. But, as with the rest of the album, this track features the band without an orchestral accompaniment.

While this album may have set the stage for other rock/classical collaborations, it is best thought of as failed experiment. Just skip it.

·                          CONDITION:

·                          THE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS VERY GOOD (+). CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has a visible 1sq. inch surface abrasion/peel-off mark on the back panel. The abrasion affects both paper slick and cardboard base and leaves a microscopic hole in the cover, probably less than 1/64 square inch)

-       Cover has some ring wear.  On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3  (front side) and 5 (back side).

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-       Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

-       Cover has two corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
