Label Conditions: Both beautiful and fresh: ultra clean, brightly vivid and attractive and I am struggling to find a single spindle mark.

Country of Manufacture: Germany.

Cat Number: C 062-90 749.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: A massive 170 grams. This has to be heaviest pressed Harvest record I have ever held. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: German Harvest records are harder to find than UK pressings. Prized for their pressing quality and certainly in this case, weight, this challenging album benefits from both.

Brief Info: A brilliant blend of a heavy rock band and large orchestra, recorded at The Royal Albert Hall in London. In these early days, Deep Purple used orchestra quite often but this is a full blown work and mainly instrumental. The concept works well and the performance is made all the more enjoyable with a much better pressed record than many I have heard. This makes a real change and even the cleanest looking copies often fail to please. Hence I took nothing for granted until I played the entire album (as per usual) in its entirety. This sets the standard high and plays with little unwanted. The odd minor sporadic tick and crackle trace being the least anyone can expect from any record this age and this being so delicate. And delicate is not the word for this, Harvest’s most challenging album in my opinion. So quiet in places you can hear a pin drop and any major unwanted sounds simply spoil the experience, so delighted to say it has very few worthy of mention. A massively pressed record, this is even heavier than some early 1960s records, and it looks barely even played. Just one faint surface mark on side one has no sound. If quality sound and pressing standards are more important than country of manufacture, this is unlikely to disappoint.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) a single, fully laminated cover that was printed and made in Germany.

Lamination – Front & Back: An absolute gem of a cover: the laminate has a lovely shine and clarity. Fresh and clear and also fully adhered with no blisters or lifting. Devoid of friction rubs or dulling and with minimal traces of record rim impression which is quite remarkable for such a massive, thick record. A few fine edge creases only and the artwork looks fantastic and seen to maximum advantage under glass-like, silky-smooth lamination. Even with angled viewing towards natural light, barely any fine hairlines can be seen proving this has hardly even been handled and certainly carefully stored. This is the first example of this cover I have seen as a single format.

Top Edge: Practically as made and straight.

Bottom Edge: Same again with tiny chip to right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering, guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine also: Solid, straight with minimal traces of compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: Odd tiny tip chip away from as made. All retain super shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A beautiful all round example of this famous Harvest early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ / Mint(-), A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and massively pressed, any record that exceeds 150 grams for this period is exceptional. A 170 gram record is a phenominal, and very substantial weight. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by exceptional clean sound and beautifully pressed - yes almost up to classical standard. One light surface mark on side one has no sound, side two is immaculate. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This pretty incredible German-pressed Harvest record plays up to its high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and few pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for one of ‘rock’s’ most demanding albums. All the orchestral parts and solos are crisp and sharp with no clipping. Few available copies will evern approach this for sound let alone outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Heard a fair number of these before – both UK original format pressings and EMI’s – most have disappointed with inherent crackle and surface noise, often present through the whole record. A record that is near impossible to hear without a the odd minor sporadic click or crackle trace, especially on the quite passages, that’s the nature of vinyl I’m afraid, but little spoil my enjoyment hearing this impressive example. If absolute silence is mandatory, well the CD format is an option, but this has little unwanted and will be a match or better most on record. I am certain this one has been played very lightly (if indeed at all) and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little, if anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find better from wherever the country of manufacture and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
