Deep Purple
'Fireball'
Harvest, UK, 1971
SHVL 793
LIKE 'WHO Do You Think You Are', 'Fireball' was, at the time, received as something of a disappointment becoming, in effect, another long lost DP opus. One that everybody has forgotten about. A record usurped by other more popular studio albums such as 'In Rock', 'Burn' and 'Machine Head' yet one that is now regarded as an essential component in the Deep Purple cannon.
Slammed originally for its experimental written on the fly content, the album exudes a frantic vibe conjuring up a vision of the band jamming their hearts out in an effort to overcome the ball and chain of 'In Rock'. Blackmore's compulsion to pull out all the stops is evident from the very first track, the proto speed metal sound of the title track with Ian Paice ramming home the point as if his life depended on it. 'Demon's Eye' and the positively challenging 'Anyone's Daughter' make for great bookends to this hugely engaging and demanding record but its the bizarre lyrical content of 'No One Came' that elevates this collection to another level.
A largely overlooked classic and a record that has definitely grown in stature over time and distance.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
