Label/Format: Harvest – Yellow and green format, that has the original ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text on the label rims. Later pressings had this changed to the EMI text.

Label Conditions: Both clean, quite fresh with light to moderate spindle marks that have very modest visiblity. The most significant issue is a name on side one as can be clearly seen on my scan. For me, nothing is as important as sound quality, the one this account, this record really delivers. So not a copy for the visual perfectionist, but offers hugely impressive sound as the early copies usually do with a record this clean.

Cat Number: SHVL 793.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good solid weight for this one.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Moderate in theory, but a complete, early issue copy that plays beautifully are less easy. The packaging may give gentle clues to age and fragility, but the record, although played a few times, offers terrific audio quality with all the detail and clarity you would want and expect from an earlier pressing.

Original Year of Release: 1971 and the matrix numbers below are that of a first-pressed copy with very low stampers for a popular rock album.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second of four absolute classics this legendary heavy band made and their final one for Harvest. Following the magnificent high standards of In Rock this was never going to be easy, but Fireball does just that. Some with less volume and refined, but still some wonderful rockers – none better than the stunning ‘The Mule’, with it’s monumental drumming from Paice. This excellent set was a great prelude to the classics Machine Head and the blistering double live set Made in Japan. Featuring their undisputed classic line-up of Blackmore, Gillan, Glover, Lord and Paice this is one of the band’s most treasured albums and beautifully packaged too. This one complete with a little wear, but my pictures possibly do not do justice to the cover, a flash will always emphasise rubbing on such a black cover.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): this being quite critical on a hugely uncompromising format. An unlaminated gatefold with ALL surfaces finely textured, not only that, the card is quite soft and delicate and it simply does not wear well (to say the least). The black finish making it near impossible to find devoid of some wear. It was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. The lyric insert and Harvest inner are also included.

Cover Front: Still attractive and does look better for real than my pictures, as stated, using a flash for the picture emphasises rubbing and white areas. There is some gentle rubbing, mostly near the edges, but practically none at all on the actual band graphic that resembles a comet. A small white spots are actually stars, well worthy of mention for those unfamiliar. Any speckle is light and barely any creasing, this being quite unusual on softer card. It also retains strong colour and has aged only very modestly overall.

Cover Back: The back is even more prone to wear as the record will press into it causing ring wear in most cases. Here only quite gentle and in terms of this one, light. A little fine edge creasing here and there showing little and overall, quite similar to front bar the light rim rubbing.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault, any rub traces are very light indeed.

Top Edges: Both straight with any rubbing patchy and very light, I cannot rule out the odd possible tiny tip-in on this cover – NOT by me hasten to add, if indeed there are any.

Bottom Edges: Just a little more rubbing, but still light for a black storage edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on the back edge, both untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Quite solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square with the edges meeting up flush and parallel. Again, a little gentle patchy rubbing, but the text is largely intact and present. Any clipping or erosion is small and light. This in white and nice to see most of still present which so often is not the case.

Corners: Any tip rubs are quite small and light, with fine to very fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: Some gentle wear which is so hard to avoid completely, so not for the perfectionist. But these fully textured examples (some had non-textured insides), are harder to find even this clean. It should please many collectors.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): this has the lining inside which again is a bonus. The main issue, like one label, is a name, band and title written across the top of one side. Some moderate crinkle but minimal creasing, all edges unsplit with no repairs. Some discolouration to the seam adhesive as well, of which few avoid.

The Lyric Insert: NEAR EXCELLENT: again, often missing. One small corner crease but few others and some mild small traces of grubbiness or minor mark here and there. A tiny nick-dink near the centre shows little and overall neat and tidy. Again, not for the more discerning, but a very fine example of this double-sized lyric insert that is guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: this quite critically graded with little to fault. Clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. Any surface marks fine and faint indeed and there are NO penetrating scratches at all. This should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This heavy rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very rich sound. Barely even a hint of any surface sound and no pops or clicks were noted. Some incredible detail and the percussion on ‘The Mule’ takes the breath away. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this early-press example that gave a truly great account of itself. Ultimate detail and sonic delivery, nothing beats a first issue and this is very well pressed with no inherent cutting or pressing noises. This copy will prove difficult to find better for sound and it looks very nice too – clearly the label name may deter the more discerning visual collector, but for sound, this really packs a punch. One I enjoyed immensely on play-grade and for quality, enjoyable and detailed sound, this is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
