Description
Deep Purple : In Rock A2 / B1
This first pressing plays to a very high standard with only a little interference on one track on S2. Aside from that the clarity, depth and power of the audio is stunning and the classic 'Child In Time' may well be the finest version I have ever heard!
As this is a genuine first press there is no EMI logo on the labels. There is an A1/B1 matrix but were changed prior to the release date. Discogs says that 1 in 20 first pressings have this matrix although I beg to differ! I have seen one yet and I have seen a lot!
The gatefold is in lovely condition with barely any wear, it has been very well preserved down the years.
SHVL 777 // A - 2 / B - 1 // TD 2 / HT 4
The audio on S1 is Near Mint- (T3 Near Mint although Mint- for majority)
The audio on S2 is Near Mint (T1 Mint- / T2 VG for final minute / T3 Ex+)
The gatefold is Ex+
The inner sleeve is Ex
The labels are Near Mint
Visual grading
The vinyl is in lovely condition overall and still has a stunning glossy sheen, it is so much cleaner than nearly all versions I have seen. S1 in particular is in beautiful condition with only one tiny faint mark and a couple of barely visible hairlines. S2 is similar but does have one hairline that becomes a small scratch on track two but this is the only imperfection on the record. The run out grooves are super clean as are the labels which have only a couple of minor spindle traces on S1 and only 4/5 on S2. This has certainly not been overplayed.
Play grading
The super charged intro on 'Speed King' could not play with any greater precision, the power and depth is stunning and there is no distortion. In the quieter section there is only minimal light static and once Gillan's vocal comes in the audio is incredibly strong. It continues to play with great quality and the only intrusion are three light ticks during Lord's mid instrumental section but there is no underlying static here. The 'high octane' section that follows is breathtaking! The power is phenomenal and again there is no distortion on the top end. The final vocal just has one tick and the remainder plays to perfection. In my opinion this is a Near Mint- start to this classic album.
'Blood Sucker' plays with genuine quality from the first groove and you know the sonic quality has not deteriorated in any way as Gillan's first 'scream' is as it would have sounded back in '70! The first verse is faultless and the second very close to that with just one tick. From then on it plays with undeniable clarity and power with just one click during the long instrumental. This section is so dynamic and it's worth pointing out that the playback is just so 'clean' with no muddiness to the sound whatsoever. That can only be because the record has not been played very much. To the end it plays with remarkable quality with no 'background' at all not even on the fade out. Even with two minor 'imperfections' I am still confident in grading this as Near Mint- but...the vast majority is far better than that!
The quiet intro on 'Child In Time' has to be heard to be believed! The clarity is stunning with barely any static and the first verse is up there with the most impressive I have ever heard. 'As new' is no exaggeration - the playback is just phenomenal! I am pleased to say it continues in the same precise way and as the music and Gillan's vocal builds there is no interference of any kind. The instrumental section then plays with STUNNING quality and yep you can turn it up to max with no fear of distortion! This is Blackmore at his finest and I cannot remember when I heard this classic section play with such distinction. The next quiet passage plays beautifully with no intrusion and the repeated verse is as good as the first! I cannot emphasise enough just how exceptional the audio is throughout this track and that same quality is very much in evidence as it builds once more. There is no obvious distortion and quite frankly I am just blown away by the sonic quality on offer here. The 'high octane' end section could hardly play any better and overall this is easily Near Mint although I am sure many would grade higher. Not one single tick, click or pop and no static either. What a version!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As per S1 'Flight Of The Rat' plays with amazing clarity and power throughout. There is no need to prevaricate here (!) other than to say you could not a find a stronger more impressive version. Although I will just say the long instrumental section is quite simply outstanding as is the percussive end section. Just pure unadulterated Mint audio from the first groove to the last. It doesn't get any better than this!
'Into The Fire' plays with great power and clarity for the vast majority. The first two minutes in particular are stunning and it's only the final minute or so that has a light tick once per revolution plus a small number of clicks. The good thing is that many of them are largely obscured by the volume of the music but it is a little intrusive at times. A shame because the rest of the album is so darn good. I would grade the first section as Near Mint and VG for the remainder.
The percussive intro on 'Living Wreck' has 4/5 ticks and the first verse then plays with superb precision and that typical Purple power. It proceeds in a very similar way with only a small number of background ticks during one section that are intrusive. I think Ex+ overall is a fair grade.
The intro on 'Hard Lovin' Man' is close to perfect with only a couple of light ticks after the initial 'high octane' section. The first fast paced instrumental piece is superb! The first vocal cannot be faulted either and it continues to play with stunning quality. Despite being the final track there is no inner groove distortion and Lord's rip-roaring solo is a case in point - it plays with phenomenal power and the same goes for Blackmore's solo that follows. This entire instrumental section is just so strong and powerful! The rest of this classic plays with great precision and Near Mint is very much deserved here.
In summary this genuine first press plays to a superb standard for the vast majority. I believe I have given an honest description of the audio and it's only 'Into The Fire' that has some obvious interference. It does not last long as as I said a fair bit of it is 'hidden' in the sheer volume of the audio. Aside from this classic album plays extremely well and S1 in particular is stunning and I honestly cannot remember when 'Child In Time' played as well as this. Not bad for a 50+ year old record!
The Gatefold
The laminated G & L gatefold is in excellent condition with only very minimal shelf wear. The edges and spine are in perfect order, the corners have barely any wear and the opening edge is also pristine with no handling wear. The front cover is super clean with no real marking, just a couple of small faint scratch lines that you can only see when held at a certain angle. The back cover is equally as impressive and the inside of the gatefold is very clean with just one very faint water stain at the bottom of the inner spine, it is hardly noticeable. The front and back cover do have a very slight 'wavy' look but it really is only very minor and certainly does not detract from the overall look. A fine example overall.
This LP came with a poly-lined inner sleeve with Patent Nos... and Made in Great Britain printed on one side. It has no side splits or tears and only some light light age related fading around the edges plus a little creasing.
