'Made In Japan'

Purple, Japan, 1972

TPS 3511

IN 1973 very few sixth form students would have been caught without a copy of this seminal double live album tucked solemnly under their arm. As a monolithic representation of the early seventies rock scene few other albums, both live and studio, even come close to capturing the sheer enormity of its impact. Pushing all known musical boundaries Purple rode their mega decibel behemoth triumphantly into the very heart of the sun.

Blackmore, for all his detached indifference, was truly a pivotal component. The golden riff to ‘Smoke On The Water’ remains possibly rocks most authentic and memorable refrain spawning a hundred thousand student guitar players in the space of just four short minutes. His soloing in ‘Child In Time’, a weed smokers favourite, is unquestionably among the top ten greatest achievements in modern musical history.

The same accolades can be bestowed upon Jon Lord, the grand gentleman of the Hammond Organ, whose intuitive, unselfish playing cleverly positions the band away from mere generators of sludge. With Lord opting to challenge Blackmore’s guitar supremacy at every opportunity the scene is set for some spectacular dog fights- the two raging war atop some of the most moving and implausible music ever recorded.

Containing just seven (long) songs the album showcases at least four of the bands most popular recordings: ‘Smoke On The Water’, ‘Child In Time’, ‘Highway Star’ (show opener) and ‘Space Truckin’. Fronted by Ian Gillan and his trouser tightening banshee wail the band accelerates out of the starting gate driven by what surely must be demons and dragons. Wonderful and still sounds amazing.

Super original Japanese copy - where it was released under the unadventurous title of 'Live In Japan'.
