This record is by Deep Purple theEnglish rock band formed in London in 1967. They are considered to beamong the pioneers of heavy metal and have sold over 100 millionalbums worldwide. Deep Purple have had several line-up changes and were brokenup for eight years from 1976 to 1984, with drummer Ian Paice being the band'sonly constant member. The first four line-ups, which constituted the band'soriginal 1968–1976 run, are officially indicated as Mark I (1968–1969), Mark II(1969–1973), Mark III (1973–1975) and Mark IV (1975–1976). Mark I comprised thefounding members of Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Rod Evans (vocals), JonLord (keyboards), Paice (drums) and Nick Simper (bass), while Mark II wasthe most commercially successful line-up, with Ian Gillan and RogerGlover replacing Evans and Simper respectively. Deep Purple (specificallyBlackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Evans, and Hughes) wereinducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Machine Head is the sixthstudio album by the band, recorded in December 1971 in Montreux,Switzerland, and released on 25 March 1972. It is the band's third album tofeature the Mark II Line up. Previous recording sessions had been slotted intothe group's gigging schedule. This time, Deep Purple wanted to dedicate time torecord an album away from the typical studio environment, hoping it wouldresult in a sound closer to their live shows. They hired the RollingStones Mobile Studio for recording and block-booked the Montreux Casino asa venue, but during a Frank Zappa concert immediately before the sessions,the casino burned to the ground after an audience member fired a flare gun.After a week of searching for an alternative venue, including a session at anearby theatre that was abandoned due to noise complaints, the band managed tobook the Grand Hotel, closed for the winter, and converted it into a liverooms suitable for recording. These events, particularly the casino fire,became the inspiration for the song Smoke on the Water. Machine Head becameDeep Purple's most commercially successful album, topping the charts in severalcountries, including the UK.
