Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks light to light(+), a little thicker than average but still showing little with normal viewings. This is a very clean record with sound to match.

A Special Note About This Copy: This is a rare version of this record that was unique to the German market and pressing. Like the Hor Zu ‘In Rock’ I am also offering, the cover is different to the UK version with slightly different artwork and also the record is stored from within the inside of the gatefold via the centre hinge fold area - like ‘The Beatles for Sale’, I always use this album as reference as most collectors will know it well, the front is single thickness card. Not only that, this German ‘Hor Zu’ pressing is of classical quality and I have rarely heard better sound example of this album ever. Quite heavily pressed with details and dynamics I swear are lacking on the UK copies, this was a real eye-opener and simply blew me away. I have NEVER had one of these before. German classical pressings have been well-documented and known for many years but when a rock album is pressed to same standard, its a thing of rare beauty. Both cover and record are very clean, the sleeve exceptional in fact, the record has a different cut to the UK version with alternative band widths. The lack of crackle, pressing faults and ultimate detail was a revelation with the best sound possible, this is a copy for the audiophile and Deep Purple connoisseur. It will not be seen often, especially outside Germany or in much better sounding condition, again, the cover is exceptional. This merits strong recommendation.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Hardly an album that needs much introduction, it’s simply one of the most famous and best of the ‘popular’ heavy albums of the early 70s. All seven tracks included will be known to most collectors and of course includes the classic ‘Smoke on the Water’ with possibly the most famous rock guitar riff ever recorded. This evergreen track is based on the infamous burning down of a Swiss venue where Frank Zappa and the Mothers were playing at the time [this famous gig can be heard on the officially issued bootleg Swiss Cheese Fire. Also featuring the most famous and best ever Deep Purple line-up of Gillan, Glover, Paice, Lord and Blackmore, this too is arguably their best ever studio album – Machine Head is a true classic in the true sense of the word. This is a lovely early-pressed German Hor Zu copy and it plays beautifully with power, grace and high detail. To my ears, it has a richer and even warmer sound than the UK copies and is very well pressed. The cut of the tracks are visually different and the cover variant will add extra interest for the specialist Deep Purple fan and collectors. Heavy rock albums via vinyl are unbeatable and this more than proves the point. Get this on to your deck and rock the night away – dah, dah, dahhh – dah dah dah-dahhh - dah dah dah-dah-dahhh.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and the merest whisker off my highest Mint(-) grading. A gatefold format, laminated both sides, the front is made with single thickness card. The inside is matt and smooth with entry for the record inside to the left of the central hinge – totally different to the UK version with the front cover being different as well. Printed and made in Germany. The outside graphics may appear to have scratches, but let me assure quickly, this is the cover’s artwork design and nothing to do with wear or blemishes, in fact both look terrific with little unwanted. This includes it’s polylined inner sleeve and the large multi-fold lyric insert sheet (with the correct German number).

Lamination – Front and Back: Both sides look magnificent with shiny, clear and ultra fresh laminate that have very little creasing and no peeling. A fine sliver of lift on the back spine edge hardly even shows and the lack of dulling, rim impression and the deep richness of the artwork makes this cover exceptional. The front graphic has the extra wood part that is not seen on the UK version. This looks even better than UK versions in my opinion and it will prove near impossible to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside looks practically as made and the entrance to the right of the spine fold is undamaged and solid, this a major variant of the UK version.

Top & Bottom Edges:All crisp, unworn or damaged, even the front thin face has hardly thickened with no feathering or softening.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back edge is closed as storage is via the centrefold, this has a real edge and is unworn and straight. The thin front again is crisp and totally sharp with no thickening or burring.

Spine and Text: Very solid but quite thin, straight with any compression gentle as is any tilt from opening. Still fully laminated with no flaking or peeling, all text pristine, any fold blemishes tiny and very faint.

Corners: Any tip rubs or blemishes are tiny and faint and very fine to excellent shape is retained (or better).

Cover Summary: A superb all-round example of this famous 1970’s cover, here seen in a slightly different guise, it will prove very ifficult to find much better from wherever. This splendid item should please most collectors.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): a large double-fold lyric sheet printed on one side only. Barely any wear or hint of creasing – a little gentle crinkle being quite critical, but very clean, fresh and all folds solid. This has the SHZE 344 number, so it is the correct Hor Zu version and not a replacement from elsewhere.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this came in a plain white inner that is polylined with one open window circle that is pristine. It shows hardly any real wear and has barely aged still being a lovely white. Minor crinkle traces with no hard creases and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: Very clean with lovely shine and rich black finish. Very solidly pressed with a different cut of the music compared to the UK version. Under bright angled light, a few mainly whispy surface marks are seen and a few light within the pressing that have NO affect on the wonderful sound. Just one very small surface mark on the start of side two is more easily seen, but again, totally harmless. I think this has been only modestly played and it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is highly impressive with a wide dynamic range and very rich sound with amazing dynamics and detail. Barely any surface sounds at all and no pops were heard. The odd ultra gentle tick on side two, but such is the power of the music, it is almost head to speaker to hear much unwanted. Real power, richness and depth and most importantly, that classic heavy vinyl sound that classic rock music demands. This super detailed recording has real clout, pace and rhythm and no other format really compares to the original vinyl when found at it’s best. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played only quite lightly, and mostly with due care, clearly well stored and looked after. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this genuine rock classic. This record will prove very difficult to find better and merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: Even though I know every track like the back of my hand, I can always enjoy hearing a great vinyl copy of this one. This was Deep Purple at their very best, a band at their creative peak following the great Fireball, In Rock and the brilliant double live set Made in Japan, recorded around this time too. Can any rock collection be taken seriously without this one? This is a terrific record and copy and can be played at great volume with high confidence of clean sound. Dah, dah, dahhh – dah dah dah-dahhh - dah dah dah-dah-dahhh, rarely sounded much better to these ears – I can sense another play coming on!

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
