Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music.
Since reorganising with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums — Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head — and used the material to build a fierce live show.
Made in Japan, its selections drawn from those albums, documented that show, in which songs were drawn out to ten and even nearly 20 minutes with no less intensity, as guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord soloed extensively and Gillan sang in a screech that became the envy of all metal bands to follow.
The signature song, of course, was "Smoke on the Water," with its memorable riff, but those extended workouts, particularly the moody "Child in Time," with Gillan's haunting falsetto wail and Blackmore's amazingly fast playing, and "Space Truckin'," with Lord's organ effects, maintained the onslaught, making this a definitive treatment of the band's catalog and its most impressive album.

Side 3: STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN (Osaka - 16th August 1972) / LAZY (Tokyo - 17th August 1972)
Side 4: SPACE TRUCKIN' (Osaka - 16th August 1972)
LABELS: EXCELLENT
The labels are clean, bright and unmarked (with none of the common foxing) but they do carry quite a few spindle traces - this copy has clearly been well loved but judging by the cleanliness of the audio performance I would say only ever played on a quality sound system
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT
All four vinyl surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen.
There are some superficial light marks/scuffs but none of these have any real audio consequence - plays beautifully
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT/EXCELLENT+
Outstanding audio quality throughout - incredibly strong and vibrant with a nice loud cut.
My play-check at very loud volume revealed no major audio issues of note - no scratches, barely any clicks/pops (just a few on "Smoke On The Water" - mostly overpowered by the loud music) and no real surface noise to speak of (the run-ins, track divisions and quieter sections - like the gentle intro to "Child In Time" - are all practically silent)
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT++/NEAR MINT
A superb example of this easily worn and ring-marked cover.
The outer laminated surfaces are clean with no rubbing and a deep, deep glossy sheen, the inside is like-new and all edges and the spine are crisp and square with no wear to speak of
