DEEP PURPLE "Made In Japan" 1972 UK PURPLE 1st PRESSING DECCA CONTRACT PRESSING, A1/B1/A1/B1, SUPERB AUDIO

DEEP PURPLE
Made In Japan

ORIGINAL UK PURPLE RECORDS (TPSP 351) FIRST PRESSING (December 1972) OF DEEP PURPLE'S TREMENDOUS DOUBLE LP LIVE SET, "Made In Japan" - A FANTASTICALLY ATMOSPHERIC LIVE ALBUM WITH A STUNNING CRYSTAL CLEAR, POWERFUL LOUD CUT

NOTE: I BELIEVE THIS COPY TO BE A PREVIOUSLY UNDOCUMENTED DECCA CONTRACT PRESSING -
FOR SEVERAL REASONS - THE LABELS HAVE THE DECCA CHARACTERISTIC GROOVE (not present on the smooth EMI labels - and clearly visible in the photos), THE RUN-OFFS HAVE NO STAMPER LETTERS (always present on EMI presses) - JUST 3/3/3/3 MOTHER NUMBERS AND THE LABELS DO NOT CARRY THE "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN' TEXT AT THE 6 O'CLOCK POSITION (again, always present on EMI presses). As I am sure you are aware, EMI contracted out pressing when demand at their Hayes pressing plant exceeded supply (to either Decca or Pye). Both Pye and Decca omit the stampers but only Decca has the grooved labels. I AM THEREFORE LED TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THIS IS A DECCA CONTRACT PRESSING FOR EMI AND AS SUCH IS A VERY RARE AND INTERESTING FIRST PRESS VARIANT

THE PURPLE COMPANY LABELS CARRY THE USUAL FIRST ISSUE "THE GRAMOPHONE CO LTD..." RIM TEXT (later changed to "EMI RECORDS")
FIRST PRESSING MATRIX:
SIDE ONE: TPS 3511 A-1U (etched "PORKY")
SIDE TWO: TPS 3511 B-1U (etched "DELTA PORK")
SIDE THREE: TPS 3512 A-1U (etched "PECKO")
SIDE FOUR: TPS 3512 B-1U (etched "PECKIE")
AND THE TWO LPs ARE HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL, OUTER LAMINATED GATEFOLD SLEEVE "Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd." DATE CODED 7211 (1972, November)

Recorded over three nights in August 1972, Deep Purple's Made in Japan was the record that brought the band to headliner status in the U.S. and elsewhere, and it remains a landmark in the history of heavy metal music.
Since reorganising with singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover in 1969, Deep Purple had recorded three important albums — Deep Purple in Rock, Fireball, and Machine Head — and used the material to build a fierce live show.
Made in Japan, its selections drawn from those albums, documented that show, in which songs were drawn out to ten and even nearly 20 minutes with no less intensity, as guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and organist Jon Lord soloed extensively and Gillan sang in a screech that became the envy of all metal bands to follow.
The signature song, of course, was "Smoke on the Water," with its memorable riff, but those extended workouts, particularly the moody "Child in Time," with Gillan's haunting falsetto wail and Blackmore's amazingly fast playing, and "Space Truckin'," with Lord's organ effects, maintained the onslaught, making this a definitive treatment of the band's catalog and its most impressive album.

Track Listing:
Side 1: HIGHWAY STAR / CHILD IN TIME
Side 2: SMOKE ON THE WATER / THE MULE
Side 3: STRANGE KIND OF WOMAN / LAZY
Side 4: SPACE TRUCKIN'

LABELS: All the labels are CLEAN and BRIGHT with only a few light spindle traces but they do have some age related foxing spots (quite common on these first press labels, possibly due to the adhesive they used in manufacture)
VINYL Visual: The surfaces retain their original DEEP, GLOSSY sheen and are CLEAN and BRIGHT with just a couple of (very) light marks which have NO audio consequence
VINYL Audio: The audio is absolutely OUTSTANDING - CRYSTAL CLEAR, VIBRANT, POWERFUL SOUND. TREMENDOUSLY ATMOSPHERIC. There are NO scratches, NO sticks, NO jumps and apart from a little surface noise/crackle on some (not all) of the quieter sections the LP play BEAUTIFULLY to a very high standard with NO groove-wear or distortion and sound STUNNING. Very critically graded EX-/EX/EX/EX for audio. GREAT SET
SLEEVE: The gatefold sleeve is in EXCELLENT condition. The outer laminated surfaces have a beautiful DEEP GLOSS with very little rubbing and only light record impression with some light half-moon creases at the opening edge and the unlaminated inside is CLEAN, BRIGHT and FRESH. The top and bottom edges have some storage wear - nothing major - and the thin spine displays all text CLEAR and BOLD. A very well preserved example of this easily worn sleeve
