Label/Format: Purple – with matt, smooth surfaces. This rarer first pressed copy includes the ‘GRAMOPHONE CO LTD’ text on label rims. Subsequent pressings replaced Gramophone with EMI.

Label Conditions: All very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks ranging from very light to light+, mostly being fine and faint. All four sides playing surfaces are immaculate and this classic double set plays with fantastic sound throughout.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Deep Purple’s second album on Purple and for me, one of the greatest live albums ever. Following the classic Machine Head this double set features seven of their very best. Extended versions and even exceeding the studio for power and performance, none better than the breathtaking ‘Space Truckin’ that occupies all of side four. The interplay between Lord’s electric organ and Paice’s percussion is absolutely magnificent and is superbly recorded. Both records look and play to the highest quality. The only blemish of note on the cover is a corner dink on the spine bottom. That apart, very impressive, this is a cover that rarely wears well, even though the outer surfaces are laminated. Over time, I have found this cover is prone to peeling and the gold colour ink dulling. The small knock apart, this is lovely as seen.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: only because of the left corner dink. A gatefold format with both front and back laminated. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the plain white inner sleeves.

Lamination – Front & Back: Firstly, the only issue of any real note is a moderate, but fairly small dink to the bottom left (spine edge) corner. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no peeling and minimal creasing (the small dink apart). Only a faint trace of rim impression, but minimal dulling around it or elsewhere, that very unusual with two heavyweight records inside a gatefold cover. The smallish corner dink apart, this is one of the finest examples you may see.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The same dink lightly seen, but little else to fault on these intensely coloured surfaces.

Top Edges: Both mainly straight with ultra smooth and totally unchipped or scuffed laminated surfaces. These are neatly flush and almost flat when closed, very impressive indeed.

Bottom Edges: Very straight, flush, flat and parallel, only a little gentle, patchy rubbing to the orange folds.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Even though there is a crease on the lower corners as stated several times, the main spine surface is superb. Exceptional as it retains all laminate with no flaking or peeling. Solid, straight and smooth with barely any hint of compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and virtually parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this being very well centred as seen.

Corners: The one dink as mentioned (again), but all others are neat and crisp with minimal hint of wear.

Cover Summary: The one dink apart, a very strong all-round example of this quite unforgiving 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This overall attractive item should please many collectors, the corner dink the only real issue for the highly discerning.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT: one better with less paper discolouration. An unlined pair with no edge splits or repairs, any creasing minimal and light, just gently aged only.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a couple of sides even better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed with way above average weight. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very light, wispy and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There are no stylus scratches at all and all four sides play superbly. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. They offer strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed with no tracking issues*, and there are some quieter passages. This first issue format pair are cleanly pressed on quality vinyl, they offer the finest sound I have heard to date. Few copies will outperform these significantly I feel sure. I am certain both records have been played very lightly and have been clearly carefully handled and stored in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these quality heavyweight records. This pair will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
