Deep Purple are back with their (multiformat) 24th album, climbing some of their highest conceptual mountains yet. They came up in the early to mid-70s as one of hard rock's most definitional acts, the likes of Machine Head, Made In Japan and Fireball establishing the grammar of the British rock form, usually with Jon Lord's Hammond organ in constant argument with Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. Though the lineup's metamorphosed countless times since then, the steady anchor is vocalist Ian Gillan, whose personal beliefs and influences seep into every inch, pore and groove of Splat!. The core conceit is that the end of humanity might mean spiritual rebirth rather than destruction, "a metamorphosis beyond physical existence".
