Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, any spindle marks are very few, fine and faint and without doubt this very early copy has hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 138 grams. A very impressive weight for this album, later ones became considerably thinner.

Rarity: Early pressings are more difficult to find than the standard EMI rim later ones, especially when little played. These early heavyweight pressings offer stunning sound quality and this one really delivers.

Brief Info: Brilliant follow-up to Machine Head and the live classic Made in Japan and their third album on the impressive quality Purple label. By now a major act within the heavy rock field, Deep Purple could do little wrong at this time. Including the classic ‘Woman From Tokyo’ and the controversial attack on ‘clean-up’ protesters in ‘Mary Long’ this is a another Purple classic. Great copy too with a perfect sound from a very early, heavy pressed record. This has ultimate detail, depth and sonic delivery of the music and without doubt, has hardly been played. This also has the earliest darker graphic cover with laminate that ends on the inside of the gatefold on the bottom edges – the lyric insert sheet also included of course.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: but actually looks better. A gatefold, laminated front and back format and was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. Includes the original polylined inner sleeve and the purple lyric insert sheet.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a deep rich shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and minimal traces of any dulling, even under light. A light press against the inside top flipback each side with any creasing gentle and light. These mostly fine hairlines on the edges and one light one on the bottom right. The graphic is dark and looks impressive both sides and has aged little.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The laminate ends on the bottom of the gatefold inside and it can be seen to have contracted a little. That totally natural of course, the main blemish is a small surface pull where the ends clearly adhered together – this a common issue when the laminate ends inside rather than tucked. This small pull on a white area so it has minimal visual impact and only small anyway. A faint semi-crease on the bottom left corner, but little else to fault and still looking nice.

Top Edges: Straight, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edges: As above up to the right corner tips that have a small rub.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear and devoid of burring or thickening. Record enters on the back edge, both are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A lovely clean spine: solid, straight with minimal compression. Folded square so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. A yellow ink spine that retains all it’s colour with no fading, this somewhat unusual. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, just the merest hint of crinkle being critical.

Corners: Very small tip rubs to the bottom right pair, little else, and all retain excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this famous old 70’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. With any blemishes being small and light, this attractive item should please many, if not most collectors. The polylined plain white heavy-duty inner is included. A little aged with some darkening of the seams and a few small tone spots. Both window circles pristine and the lining ultra clear with no edge splits. Barely any creasing with any crinkle light, there are no repairs.

The Lyric Sheet: EXCELLENT(+): the lyrics printed one side, the other is white. A gentle semi-crease on the bottom right corner, any others tiny, few and faint, merely handling crinkle traces. Clean, fresh with sharp edges and corners. This has the G&L imprint.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with nothing more than a few ultra faint and fine surface traces that just catch the light with angled viewing. Finding these early heavy pressed Purple albums this clean is difficult, and for sure, this has hardly been played. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by superb clean sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very impressive album plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is a very clean pressing and typically high quality Purple record. Heavy rock always sounds superb via the analogue format, and the early cuts better still with ultimate punch and detail. This simply pulsates from the speakers with real drive, pace and clout. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – I can honestly state, I have never heard a better copy. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
