Under the auspices of the USSR Ministry of Culture comes this definitive 10 LP set capturing the art of basso Chaliapin.
To quote musicologist Richard LeSeur:
“Feodor Chaliapin is perhaps the most legendary operatic bass in history. Possessed of a large and beautiful voice, he devoted himself to all aspects of his art -- most significantly his dramatic portrayals -- at a time when such things were not at all typical of singers.
“Chaliapin was a large man with great dramatic flair, and he could portray any type of character. He was a master of makeup, and he used this skill to help create his characters. His voice was wide ranging, allowing him to sing baritone roles like Eugene Onegin as well as bass roles like Oroveso. In his recitals, he never revealed what he would sing; the printed program would simply say ‘Selections to be announced.’"
This set unquestionably covers the gamut of this great artists career, including arias and recitals of note, all described in detail (translated) in the enclosed book.
An amazing testament, here in a clothbound box that is meagerly built to begin with, having little weight. As a result, it has split on the two outside corners from lack of support (it’s more paper than board).
Within, are 10 Russian pressings that look entirely unplayed. Might be mint.
An extraordinary collection, unlike any other ever assembled.

Shipping and handling is $5 for up to 5 LPs shipped within the States. Internationally, $15 via airmail for the first LP, $3 each thereafter. (Canada is half that.) Boxes over 4 lbs., add another $6, because First Class is no longer available at that weight, just Priority Mail. Note, too, boxed sets of LPs require more postage.
