Originally released in 1992, two years on from their blistering self-titled debut album, Legion marked the sophomore full-length from Floridian death metal pioneers Deicide. Largely credited as being one of the first true blueprints for the technical wizardry the genre would eventually become renowned for, the material is noted for being far more dexterous, complex and brutally oppressive when compared to its predecessor. Clocking in at just 29 minutes, many would be forgiven for presuming a hardcore/thrash influence ala Slayer might be the culprit, but upon aurally experiencing the frenetic mayhem, few forbears come to mind. Morse Code blastbeats, utterly chaotic lead guitar solos and an overall increase in pace, would open a new decrepit door for the death metal scene, where viciousness and virtuosic songcraft could morph together in depraved fashion. Sidenote: The material was so complex that the Hoffman brothers quit the band once recording had ceased due to their inability to perform the tracks in a live setting.
