DEMONSTRATION/BACKERS RECORD FOR 1962’S “FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM” WITH 3 NUMBERS NOT USED IN FINAL VERSION!!
Demonstration records were used by Broadway producers to send out to potential backers to raise funds for productions and what we have here is the very rare demo record for 1962’s “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” Stephen Sondheim’s first musical for which he did BOTH music and lyrics. When the musical starring Zero Mostel was on the road, the producers couldn’t figure out why audience reaction was so muted to the bawdy goings-on. The legendary Jerome Robbins was called in for his opinion and he said they had made the mistake of not letting the audience know what to expect from the beginning. So Sondheim’s opening number, “Love Is In the Air” -- heard here on this demo LP -- was thrown out and “Comedy Tonight” was put in and a hit was born. Two other numbers NOT in the musical as it was finally premiered -- “I Do Like You” and “Your Eyes Are Blue” --are also heard on this rare LP. PLEASE NOTE: Nameless studio singers are heard on this album, NOT Sondheim. Also, there is only ONE side to this LP that has songs; the other is BLANK.
