AFREAKA! Lp by DEMON FUZZ. Original UK 1st pressing on DAWN label (DNLS 3013), from 1970. Psychedelic, afro rock grail, by a cult group from the English underground. Definitely not your average rock session of the period ;) Their brand of UK psychedelia was quite unique and ahead of the curve. An English coloured group (their words) fusing rock / jazz and funk with distinctive African influences. Released on the cult Dawn label (home to other important bands like Comus / Titus Groan / Quicksand / Pluto / Heron etc). The whole Afreaka! session is superb with diverse compositions and stripped back, raw production. Progressive rhythms that although different in delivery, sit somewhere between Eddy Grant's 32nd Turnoff and Assagai on Vertigo label. Our soundclip opens with a sample of syncopated beats and Arabic tinged jazz horns edited from ANOTHER COUNTRY followed by all trax in their entirety. MERCY (VARIATION No. 1) is maybe the most afro-centric track with shades of Fela Kuti in places / long fuzz bass intro to the killer PAST PRESENT AND FUTURE (that reminds us of the French group, Acanthus used by Jean Rollin for his Le Frisson Des Vampires movie) / garage psych style vocals and funky groove to ANOTHER COUNTRY (with super-long, hip hop break midway) etc etc. Brilliant musicianship... heavy drum patterns / horns and flute with both spiritual jazz and middle-eastern phrasings / wah wah / fuzz bass / groovy hammond (sometimes more gothic prog) / congas and percussion. Stoned and experimental moods or more funky and uptempo. Should also appeal to lovers of the black psych sounds of the Chains And Black Exhaust funk rock mix / Purple Image / African People / Black Merda et al. Sampled in hip hop with breaks and beats on every track. Striking, sleeve artwork with wonderfully iconic pose of a band member with knitted tribal - ritual head mask and mysterious looking group shot inside the gatefold too :) Very rare Lp!!! Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG beat afro afro-beat arabian

Vinyl is in shiny, strong VG++ condition with a few hairlines / faint scuffs. Light surface noises. Loud production sound. A few soft pops / soft ticks in places (as you can hear on our soundclip). Tiny pressing anomaly (like a mini nick in the vinyl to outer dead wax area of Side A) may cause a skip before "Past Present And Future" actually starts but it all depends on how careful you track your stylus onto the record. Does not affect the music but just mentioning to be correct. The laminated, gatefold sleeve is in strong VG+ condition overall, regardless of the corner wear (see photo). Some laminate peeling / cracking to a section of the bottom spine area. Some light ring wear (mostly to back sleeve) and the usual faint marks / scuffs and some laminate creases from storage, this particluar release always seems to have. Very rare Lp!!!
