Label Conditions: All in superb conditions: very clean, fresh and attractive with incredible deep colour and only a tiny few spindle traces on side three. That fairly predictable as side four includes the sublime title track and the magnificent ‘Little Wing’. Any other spindle traces on the other labels are bordering on minuscule.

Cat Number: SUPER 2625 005 (set number) 2335-009/010 on the record labels.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 127 / 112 grams. Average and a little below, but this set plays superbly.

Rarity: I consider this non-charting early Polydor album moderately scarce, so many are found as later pressings on RSO.

Brief Artist & Album Info: A true classic double set and every song is a gem. Studying the photographs inside the fold-out sleeve makes you question how such a wrecked bunch of guys could make such a great record. Excess was obviously the order of the day, yet excel is what they did. Everyone will know ‘Layla’, still one of Clapton’s best-loved rock anthems, but here is the chance to strike a chord for Duane Allman’s consistently brilliant guitar, especially on lost gems such as ‘Anyday’ and ‘Key to the Highway’. Has anyone noticed how good Jim Gordon’s drumming was as well? I can hardly believe this album failed to chart in the UK. It now always features very high in any all-time greats list and very clean, little played Polydor pressings of this album are getting harder to find, especially with a clean lesser-worn cover. The title song, with one of the most famous intros and riffs ever recorded, is a pure rock classic, but it does not end there. There are long songs and short songs, some gentle, some more rocky with stunning Clapton and Duane Allman guitar-work. A magnificent longer version of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Little Wing’ is also included which has long been a favourite of mine, and actually I think the best on the whole album. Can anyone ever explain or fathom why this failed to sell well initially? Only after time passed, did more investigate this gem, hence more are seen on RSO. Post-Cream Clapton rarely sounded better, this an indispensable double set.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this being somewhat critical. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the two matching 516/517 Polydor inner sleeves.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Cover Front: A super front and a lovely work-of-art, the lovely Layla will rarely be seen much better. This has little to fault being clean, fresh and attractive with just the odd tiny corner tip crease and minor tip rub. Any rubbing minimal and just a couple of light, gentle half moon type surface creases that barely even show when viewed normally, full-on. Gatefold double albums so often are rife with ringwear or at least with noticeable rim impression – but this one has pretty much avoided both.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, being darker and more revealing, this is in super condition with little to fault. Very fine left edge burr traces being very critical, but little else.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Nigh-on perfect: wear and crease-free and highly attractive.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with barely any hint of wear.

Bottom Edges: Some quite light patchy rubbing on the back, the only reason this splendid cover was not graded higher.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and the front especially sharp with little wear. Just a little thickening or burring on the back that is a fraction proud of the front. Records are stored on these edges.

Spine and Text: A superb spine, this has hardly any wear with any minor rubbing just to the very ends that few will ever avoid totally. Very solid, straight, uncompressed and folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. All the text is fully present and totally unworn, bold and sharp. Even the fold hinges are unworn, that is never easy to find.

Corners: Only very light tip rubs with the odd tiny tip crease. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A lovely all-round example and one that does it very fine justice. With most of any wear on the bottom back edge, it will take a near exceptional example to better it significantly. With the main areas – front, back, inside and spine all in very impressive conditions, this should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: Both EXCELLENT(+): two Polydor lined inners with barely any creasing, all window circles crisp and undamaged, both linings clear. Mildly aged with a little of the usual discolouration, mainly to the seam adhesive. Being a slightly later pressing, these have the thinner, softer (but safer) linings. These are the originals for this copy and have the 516/517 numbers near the bottom right corner. No edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT (side 3) EXCELLENT(++) (others): a lovely visual pair with only very fine and faint surface traces on side three seen under bright angled light. Totally superficial and most even finer than hairlines. The other three sides are superb with barely anything seen (even critically viewed). Very clean with excellent shine and quite solidly pressed. A pair that appear very little played, this reitterated by top quality sound. Visually a super Polydor pair that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play above their visual gradings with strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. They offer impressive clean audio qualith and are very well pressed. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this beautiful double album. For those who bothered to buy this at issue time or a little beyond on Polydor, many played it heavily often on the most basic of record players. Thus this album is not quite as easy to find this clean as you may think. A classic, but not a great seller initially, this pair of records could prove difficult to find much better. More than worthy of strong recommendation – simply beautiful music and impressive audio quality – do not lose this evergreen set.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
