Deroy (DER 1196)

Here we have an unknown private pressing on the hugely sought after Deroy label. We bought this album four months ago and have failed to find any information on it anywhere. It is as far as we know completely unknown in public collecting circles.

As a few collectors know Deroy Sound Services was a custom record pressing business in Carnforth, Lancashire, England between approximately 1968 and 1978. Apart from making electric organ records Deroy also pressed one off acetates and test pressings as well as making very short run albums for artists, bands, choirs and so on. Most came out in tiny amounts, almost always under 100 copies to avoid tax. Some have become legendary and sell for huge sums.

What we have here is a record made on behalf of a guitar teacher who recorded his pupils in a live concert. It comes in a folded piece of thick card with a pasted on glossy information sheet on the front. It was recorded in 1975 and consists of mostly beginners playing Folk songs. Nothing really stands out before we come to the last two tracks. They are all nice enough renderings, but the last two tracks will be what interests both Folk and Deroy collectors.

 These two tracks are Shoals of Herrings and Geordie by two past students Sue and Dave with the teacher, Pete, providing accompaniment. These are two great versions and i would imagine these are the only time they were ever put to vinyl. We have recorded just over a minute of each track, i'm sure you'll agree that they are both excellent versions.

Comes with plain white labels with the Deroy catalogue number stamped in the run out grooves.

Please note that our grading has nothing to do with the age of the record, we grade all records the same whether they are 40 years old or 1 year old.

CONDITION

Sleeve: VG

Record: Visually VG+, Playback VG (visually it only has just a few light hairlines and scuffs, as well as some paper scuffing but nothing that can be felt. Plays with light crackle as can be heard. I have recorded on a sensitive set up with a Nagaoka cartridge and elliptical stylus. I have also tried playing with a Stanton cartridge and two different Stanton conical stylus with the same result. Recorded in stereo, playback has less crackle when played in mono)

Our grading is strict so as not to disappoint, we have been selling on ebay since 1998 & know how important this is. Grading of records is done with the record angled under a 100 Watt bulb. Scans are of actual item up for auction. All records are packed securely & most importantly packed outside of the picture sleeve (in a plain inner sleeve) so as to avoid seam splits during shipping.

Please note that we do NOT use noise reduction on our sound files so you get to hear how the record plays. We use a Technics SL1210 MK2 which are well known for giving a slightly worse sound quality when hooked up to a computer as to what you'll hear through the stereo.

Near Mint
Almost mint. Very minor paper scuffs and very little else can appear on the vinyl. This will most likely have occurred during packaging, or removing the record from the inner sleeve but obviously it had been handled with extreme care. Any flaw should be very hard to see. The cover should look as close to perfect with only minor signs of wear and/or age. Minor impressions to the cover (due to the outer edge of the vinyl resting inside) may be acceptable, however the artwork should be as close to perfect as can be.

Excellent
An excellent condition for vinyl will allow minor scuffs (Scuffs lay on top of the grooves) which are visible but only slightly.The wear should be minimal.The play should be close to perfect as well. Some impression to the cover (minor outer ring wear) but no ink wear. Some slight creases to the corners, but not wrinkled and obtrusive to the eye. The corners can show a little white, meaning slight wear. No seam splits or writing on the cover or taped repairs.

VG++
As Excellent but with a larger number of scuffs, maybe a couple of hairlines (very light scratch that can't be felt) or a couple of marks. Sound quality should still be very close to that of an Excellent record with only minor crackle in quiet segments only, NO scratches that can be felt. Cover as Excellent but there may be a small seam split on the cover, or a very minimal amount of writing like a name written in small writing or a number. A VG++ record should be an acceptable record to live with if you aren't looking to pay the price of a Near Mint copy.
