Out of print for a criminal length of time, the iconic 1982 Descendents debut full-length Milo Goes To College returns to vinyl, with this unique Punk Note pressing featuring alternative artwork in homage to the classic Blue Note jazz series. If you were to trace the SoCal (Southern California) hardcore lineage to the birth of pop-punk, this is where you'd begin. While bands such as Black Flag and Circle Jerks were venting political frustrations and world-weary concerns through debauched, drugged out chaos, Descendents were the first to challenge what it meant to fit in within the scene, going so far as to pen the ferocious 'I'm Not A Punk'. The album title even refers to the fact vocalist Milo Aukerman would depart after recording to attend college to study biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego. Nerdy, pining for a girlfriend, unable to fit in, all of these tropes were first popularised by a group of unlikely misfits who grew tired of being the listeners and not providing a more authentic voice for those attending the burgeoning hardcore shows of the era. 15 tracks delivered over barely 20 minutes, this album birthed a plethora of punk classics, elevated by their relatable material and embracing of sugar-coated pop melodies, from 'Myage' to 'I'm Not A Loser', 'Parents', 'Catalina' and 'Hope'. Without Descendents, and particularly this record, there's no Blink-182, NOFX, The Distillers. You get the picture.
