Returning to vinyl following a criminally long absence, Milo Goes To College served as the classic 1982 debut album from SoCal (Southern California) pop-punk pioneers Descendents. Where other bands of the era like Black Flag or Circle Jerks were busy delivering politically driven, drug-addled venom, these four nerdy misfits desired more melody and relatability, with Dave Grohl of Nirvana/Foo Fighters once opining - "None of us were getting laid. We were listening to hardcore". From their ferocious mission statement of 'I'm Not A Punk', the album would take aim at everything from posers to junkies, metalheads to upper class kids, parents and you best believe girls who didn't notice them. The album title even refers to the fact that vocalist Milo Aukerman would depart the group for an extended period after recording to study biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego. Now, that's punk! Providing a much more authentic voice to the legions of young fans packing out the early hardcore shows, Descendents proved gimmicky aesthetics and feral rage were not required to craft impassioned punk songs; imbuing their tracks with juvenile humour, in-jokes and embracing saccharine pop melodies, which would ultimately lead to the accidental mad scientist creation of what we now know today as pop-punk. At 15 tracks delivered over a barrage lasting only a little more than 20 minutes, the record is packed with a myriad of punk classics, including 'Myage', 'Parents, 'I'm Not A Loser', 'Catalina' and 'Hope'. For the uninformed fans of everything from Blink-182 to NOFX or The Distillers, you owe it to yourself to get familiar with this integral blueprint where it all began.
