·       DEXTER GORDON with SONNY CLARK AND OTHERS - GO! -  1962 BLUE NOTE STEREO LP BST-84112

·       GENUINE  U.S. PRESSING

*** STILL SEALED BLUE NOTE STEREO LP, BELIEVED TO BE A LIBERTY PRESSING CIRCA 1968 (SORRY, WE ARE NOT ENTIRELY CERTAIN) ***

THIS ITEM COMES FROM OUR RECENT ACQUISITION OF ABOUT 35 STILL SEALED BLUE NOTE TITLES WHICH APPEAR TO BE OF THE 1966/67 VINTAGE (LIBERTY ERA), IN WHICH (BASED ON THE SAMPLE OF ABOUT 10 ITEMS WE OPENED) ABOUT 80% WERE LIBERTY PRESSINGS (SOME FIRST PRESSINGS, SOME SECOND) AND ABOUT 20% WERE NEW YORK, USA PRESSINGS (FIRST PRESSINGS). THESE TITLES ALMOST INVARIABLY HAVE LIBERTY INNER SLEEVES INSIDE, BUT SOME OF THEM DO ACTUALLY COME WITH THE ORIGINAL NEW YORK, USA LABELS INSIDE, APPARENTLY BEING THE LAST BATCH OF THE BLUE NOTE'S NEW YORK, USA PRESSINGS JUST BEFORE LIBERTY STARTED USING THEIR OWN VERSION OF THE BLUE NOTE LABEL. WE CAUTION THAT THERE IS A STRONG STATISTICAL POSSIBILITY THAT THIS MAY NOT BE THE FIRST (NEW YORK, USA) PRESSING, BUT, IN ANY EVENT, IT IS NOT EXPECTED TO BE LATER THAN THE SECOND (DIVISION OF LIBERTY) PRESSING CIRCA 1967. FROM WHAT WE COULD DETERMINE, ALL OF THESE STILL SEALED BLUE NOTE TITLES HAVE BEEN MASTERED BY RUDY VAN GELDER AND WILL HAVE HIS STAMP IN THE TRAIL-OFF VINYL, BUT NONE OF THE RECORDS WILL HAVE EITHER DEEP GROOVES OR PLASTYLITE ("EAR") STAMPS .

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BACK COVER OF THE ALBUM MAKES A POINTED REFERENCE TO THE AVAILABILITY OF THIS TITLE IN BOTH MONO AND STEREO, MEANING THAT THE ALBUM HAD TO HAVE BEEN RELEASED DURING THE MONO ERA WHICH - ON BLUE NOTE TITLES - ENDED IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 1968, DURING THE SO--CALLED "LIBERTY" ERA.  IT WOULD BE EXCEPTIONALLY UNUSUAL FOR THE MONO CATALOG NUMBER TO APPEAR ON TITLES PRESSED AFTER THE MONO TITLES HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED , WHICH IS WHY WE STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT THE LATEST PRESSING YOU MAY FIND INSIDE IS THE SECOND ("DIVISION OF LIBERTY RECORDS). WE DO NOT EXPECT THAT THE BUYER WILL FIND ANY PRESSING LATER THAN 1968 INSIDE.

·       BELIEVED TO BE AN EARLY PRESSING CIRCA 1968 ON WHITE AND BLUE 'BLUE NOTE' LABEL WITH 'A DIVISION OF LIBERTY RECORDS INSCRIPTION ON THE LABEL (WE ARE NOT ENTIRELY SURE; WE CAUTION THAT THIS MAY ALSO BE A UNITED ARTISTS PRESSING CIRCA 1971)

·       Recorded (and probably mastered) by Rudy Van Gelder

·       THIS IS NOT AN IMPORT, RECORD CLUB RELEASE OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

(Note: this is a REAL image of the ACTUAL item you are bidding on. This is NOT a "recycled" image from our previous auction. What you see is what you’ll get.  GUARANTEED!)

Talk about leaving America on a high note! Soon after the recording session that produced Go, Gordon crossed the Atlantic for more welcoming shores in France, a land famous for its love of that American classic music form called jazz as well as home to many expatriate American jazz musicians. In France, Gordon would go on to make the wonder Our Man in Paris, one of the coolest platters I happen to own. While this album is simpler than his Paris recordings, it' nonetheless a joy to play again and again.

This magnificent record kicks off in style as bassist Butch Warren's intro for "Cheese Cake" opens the door into a room filled with Dexter's horn. It's a place you don't want to leave. The theme is an addictive confection, the pauses full of anticipation, and all the solos, including Sonny Clark's on piano, absolutely steam with cool. The record has two moving ballads that slow things down at just the right time, but the highlight of the whole session has to be Cole Porter's "Love For Sale." Gordon's version begins with an understated Latin intro. The saxophonist extraordinaire then blows a loving treatment of the irrepressible melody; the big man even manages to insert the Mexican hat dance somewhere along the way.

Much like fellow Blue Note virtuosos  Blue Mitchell, Lee Morgan, and Tina Brooks, Gordon truly creates jazz as unbridled joy. You can't ask for much more than that. Make yourself happy by adding this to your collection, as well as Our Man in Paris. Black beret, dark glasses, and strong espresso, optional.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)

From the first moments when Dexter Gordon sails into the opening song full of brightness and confidence, it is obvious that Go! is going to be one of those albums where everything just seems to come together magically. A stellar quartet including the stylish pianist Sonny Clark, the agile drummer Billy Higgins, and the solid yet flexible bassist Butch Warren are absolutely crucial in making this album work, but it is still Gordon who shines. Whether he is dropping quotes into "Three O'Clock in the Morning" or running around with spritely bop phrases in "Cheese Cake," the album pops and crackles with energy and exuberance. Beautiful ballads like "I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry" metamorphosize that energy into emotion and passion, but you can still see it there nonetheless. Gordon had many high points in his five decade-long career, but this is certainly the peak of it all.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)          The record is believed to come in its original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

COVER IS  STILL SEALED; HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT MINT OR NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS VG++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A visible mold stain affects the area about 4 square inches in size in one bottom corner; there is no structural damage to the cover, and both cardboard base and paper slick are intact, however, the stain is visible and has caused a slight warp in the affected area (which will NOT have any effect on the record)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.
