Description
A rare record now, but not in the best condition. If you are looking for these performances in high quality sound, I would suggest that you should buy the Australian Eloquence CD issue. If, however, you are looking to fill a gap in your LP collection, this record may be of interest, but please read the following description carefully before committing to buy.
This record dates from 1952, and the cover is fairly heavily worn. One or two tears have been carefully and invisibly mended, so it is still in one piece, but it shows some creases and wear, particularly around the edges. It is somewhat soiled and yellowed with age, and there appears to be a child's crayon mark on the front, top left.
The vinyl itself looks surprisingly good - quite glossy and no deep scratches or marks, apart from one on the second side, which comes at the end of the Szymanowski Notturno and into the beginning of the Tarantella. This can be seen in the photographs. Apart from this, the surface does show fine hairline scratches and a fair degree of handling. Spindle-marks are minimal. I have played the record through a couple of times on a decent turntable and it plays without skipping or sticking. However, despite the record's fairly clean appearance, the sound quality is quite crackly with many clicks and pops and general background noises, and the scratch described above produces loud clicks for a couple of minutes. If you can hear past the clicks and pops, however, there does not seem to be much evidence of actual groove wear - no distortion or roughness in the music. The sound might be improved by professional cleaning, perhaps. Personally, I would not enjoy listening to this (I prefer CDs anyway), but I appreciate that it is almost 70 years old and quite rare and therefore still collectable. It would still appear to qualify for a "Good" rating by Goldmine standards, but I have always thought that was rather generous. It's old, it's used, but it's complete in its original sleeve and it plays - what more can I say?
I'm listing this at a low starting price and quite honestly would not advise anyone to pay a very high price for it - but it doesn't come up for sale very often. I have described it as honestly as I can, and for that reason I am not accepting returns - it's not worth the hassle for an item like this. Please consider carefully before bidding.
