»Belcanto auf dem Cello« - scheint der passendste Kommentar zu sein, der nach einem Konzert des berühmten italianischen Musikers zu hören war. Die Tonqualität, die er mit seinem Cello hervorzubringen imstande war, ist von bemerkenswerter Flexibilität und Wärme und ähnelt beinahe einer schönen Stimme. Dennoch ist jede einzelne Phrase perfekt ausgeformt. Seine beseelte Aufführung verleiht jeder Interpretation einen besonderen Zauber.
Enrico Mainardi wurde 1897 in Mailand geboren und studierte am dortigen Verdi-Konservatorium. Im Alter von 13 Jahren hatte er seinen ersten Auftritt als Solist. Drei Jahre später führte seine Zusammenarbeit mit Max Reger zur Uraufführung von dessen Cellosonate Op. 116. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt hat Enrico Mainardi Solokonzerte in allen Ländern Europas gegeben. Etliche Jahre hatte er eine Professur an der Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rom inne; außerdem lehrte er regelmäßig bei den Sommerkursen in Salzburg und Luzern. Gemeinsam mit Edwin Fischer und Georg Kulenkampff gründete er 1935 ein europaweit bekanntes Trio. Als Kulenkampff 1948 starb, trat Wolfgang Schneiderhan an seine Stelle. Enrico Mainardi wurde zudem als Komponist und Dirigent bekannt. Die Uraufführung seines Cellokonzerts in Deutschland fand in Bochum im März 1952 statt. Seine Bedeutung als Solist und Lehrer ist unumstritten. Er starb 1976.

»Belcanto on a violoncello« - seems to be the most appropriate comment overheard after a concert given by the famous Italian musician. The tone quality produced on his cello is of a remarkable flexibility and warmth, almost like a beautiful voice. Yet, every single phrase is moulded to perfection. His inspired performance imparts magic to each interpretation.
Enrico Mainardi was born 1897 in Milano, and studied there at the Verdi Conservatoire. At the age of 13 he appeared before the public as a soloist. Three years later his collaboration with Max Reger led to the first performance of the latter’s violoncello sonata Op. 116. Since then Enrico Mainardi has given solo performances in all European countries. For some years Mainardi has held a professorship at the Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome, and regularly takes part in the annual summer courses at Salzburg and Lucerne. Together with Edwin Fischer and Georg Kulenkampff he formed a trio, well known throughout Europe. When Kuhlenkampff died a few years ago, his place was taken by Wolfgang Schneiderhan. Enrico Mainardi has made a name for himself as a composer and conductor. The first German performance of his cello concerto took place at Bochum in March 1952. His importance as a soloist and a teacher is indisputable.
