A RARE EARLY ROCK GARAGE CLASSIC

This is a rare obscure garage 45 featuring Dicky Dee and the Revenues. It’s on a very early Action Records label. It’s quite rockin’ and has a garage attitude, especially the “No No No” A-side. The B side is a raunchy cover of Jackie Wilson’s Northern Soul Stomper ‘Squeeze Her Tease Her’ but done more like the Animal’s classic cover than the more soulful Motown styled Wilson original. 

The label is kind of odd. I’ve never seen an Action label quite like it before. The later labels had the horizontal shooting star motif but this one is different with a vertical blue shooting star. Action was a UK soul label formed in 1968 but this 45 has a distinct US feel to it. Nothing about it suggests UK to me. Odd. It’s a blue and white label (promo?) and record # A-101, so it might have been a one shot deal. 

I can’t find much about Dicky Dee and the Revenues on the Internet. The name sounds like it was made up just to ‘cash in’ on the record scene but I don’t really know. The 45 was Produced by Dick DeMarco (Dicky D ?) and M. Dickman. That’s about all I know other than it’s a cool sounding rare garagey record. 

I found this rare 45 single during one of my frequent crate digging trips into the city of Philadelphia.

 I had a lot of fun digging for records in Philadelphia. Philly and its sister city across the river, Camden were hot beds of early Rock N Roll activity. American Bandstand was a local show back then, Bill Haley and the Comets had busted out of Boothwyn, PA, just up the road and taken the world by storm, The RCA record plant (where Elvis records were made) was a central part of downtown Camden and records were common and cheap. Cameo Parkway records was here in Philly as well with a huge stable mate of artists. That’s where the Chubby Checker ‘Twist’ craze started. It wasn’t unusual to see pop stars hanging out at their main building on Broad at Spruce street downtown by City Hall. Chancellor records in Camden also had Frankie Avalon, Fabian and other teen heartthrobs. 

Philly always had a rich Jazz history (Coltrane lived here) and a large Black, Soul, Blues and R&B community. It’s no surprise that some of the best rare unusual records documenting the roots of rock were from Philly. I went to graduate school there and spent many hours digging in stores, basements, clubs and bars looking for those old discarded vinyl gems. I found many and this 45 is one of them. Now that I’m retiring I need to downsize and part with some of my collection. I have quite a bit of vintage Rock, Surf, Garage, Soul, Funk, Northern Soul and other hip 45s that I will be listing in the next few weeks here. Please keep checking for new listings. 

Everybody I’ve ever played this 45 for has been floored by the song and curious who it was and where I found it. No one seems to have ever heard of them but everyone seems to love it. I’ve only seen 1 other copy of this in my many years of collecting. A classic and hard to find. It belongs in everyone’s collection. 

Condition: I’d call this EX. Generic white sleeve. Overall, clean and shiny with no wear. No scuffs or scratches. Clean. Tested. Plays and sounds great. I’m sure you’ll be more than happy with this rare record. 

It would be a great addition to any garage, rock, soul or Northern Soul collection and, of course, of interest to Obscure Garage Band collectors. It’s a great song that fits so well into several different genres, but has clear Garage/Soul roots. A nice copy of this monster rarity.

All 45s come in generic white paper sleeves and simple poly-bags, unless otherwise pictured. I do try to match up proper, appropriate generic company sleeves with my 45’s and I’ll gladly include them if I have them. 

All items are packaged with sturdy cardboard mailers and filler pads. I take pride in my packaging and shipping and pack my records as if I were sending them to myself. I refuse to use cheap flimsy packaging material when sending my records. I treat them as if they were my own and mail them the same way. 

All records have been cleaned and played by me. I visually inspect all records under bright light, personally clean them and then play them on a modern high-end turntable to get a true picture of condition. I'm a 0ne-man operation, this is a hobby, not my job. I do this for fun. I do this because I love music, love collecting vinyl and want others to share in that same experience. I take my time listening, researching, grading, listing and packaging. I will NOT sell any record that I personally would not want in my collection. 

I’ve been told by other vinyl collecting friends that I under-grade the condition of my records. I see no harm in that. If that VG+ record comes and it’s nicer that you thought, great! We’ve all been burned by that EX- record purchase only to get it and it looks like it was cleaned with sandpaper and played with a rusty nail. My goal is to avoid that ever happening to me or you ever again. My grading is fair and honest and I will ALWAYS refund you for anything you’re not happy with.
