Edition Kunste-Kunst
Mega rare private edition micro-press by german weirdo composer Diether de La Motte moving somewhere between Ernst Jandl and the Wiener Gruppe.
Some info on the release: Rare private german release on Edition Kunste-Kunst by german composer and theoretician Diether De La Motte, known also from his tape music release Mixed Music II on Deutsche Grammophon. Here you get a highly unusual assortment of "sound plays", "stories", poems and piano compositions, moving in the line between the Lautpoesie of austrian poet Ernst Jandl and the Wiener Gruppe of Oswald Wiener, Gerhard Ruhm, Konrad Bayer, H.C. Artmann, Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler, sounding at moment like the albums of the Selten Gehorte Musik if one dares to find a musical analogue to this one.
De la Motte studied at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold with William Painter (composition), Conrad Hansen (piano) and Kurt Thomas (choral conducting). In the summer courses in Darmstadt he heard Rene Leibowitz, Ernst Krenek, Wolfgang Fortner and Olivier Messiaen. As a teacher he taught from 1950 composition, morphology and piano at the Ev. Landeskirchenmusikschule in Düsseldorf. Church Music School in Düsseldorf. Here he worked from 1955 as a music critic of the Rheinische Post. According to his editor working for the Schott publishing house in Mainz (since 1959) and in 1962 he joined the Hamburg Academy of Music, where he received in 1964 a professorship for composition and music theory. With his appointment to Vienna in Austria was founded, the first diploma music theory.
The fascination of the sound of language and the resulting interaction with speaking determines not only the artistic creation de la Motte, but also his art appreciation and education: "visible" music (Sichtbare Musik) heard, theater plays to be heard through musical analysis of poems, and his willingness to wonder about how musically the language is sounding, by mapping musically language, be it materially with words were barely detectable.
Based on the content of the criticism of the then form of teaching instruction de la Motte opens up in the 60's the musical analysis as a subject of university education. In particular, methodology and didactics of the time as a historical fact as the art festival and music theory were criticized by a major impetus. The fact that it's in their nature and not as a scientific construct conveys that he's no different exercises as music theory, practice, apply, de la Motte "against the separation of music and music theory." His standard-setting work of teaching and books on music theory, almost all disciplines are available in several editions and were translated into many languages. Some of his students include Manfred Trojahn, Franz Zaunschirm, Detlev Glanert and Nikolaus Schapfl. De La Motte belongs to the great avant-garde/experimental composers "wave" that appeared in Europe in the 60's/70's/80's with main representators composers like Hans Werner Henze, Pierre Boulez, György Kurtág, Luis De Pablo, Tomas Marco and Andres Lewin Richter, Carles Santos, Open Music, and Josep Mestres-Quadreny, Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti and Bruno Maderna, Henri Pousseur or more widely Bernd Alois Zimmermann, John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, Miguel Angel Coria, Juan Hidalgo, Iannis Xenakis and of course Pendercki.
