Dinah Washington, who - 43 years after her death - remains the uncrowned queen of Blues (capital "B"), used to protest this unofficial title, claiming (lamely) that she sang jazz, blues, crossover pop and ballads with equal proficiency. Namely, as many people who grew up and were raised in the dust bowl poverty of the Great Depression, she was extremely sensitive to maintaining her crossover and pop diva status which she acquired in the mid-to-late 1950's. Alas, the Blues refused to walk away. This album is drenched in the pure blues - blues in her voice, in her rhythm, sence of phrasing, diction and rhythmic accompaniment, just as were many of her "crossover" albums that would follow. Lush arrangements could never hide away the blues. Dinah could sing a postage stamp, and the blues would still come across.
Technically, this was supposed to be album of standards, covers and popular ballads of the day, and in many ways it was. But the blues permeates this album in the same manner good vibes and humor permeate every Louis Armstrong recording and class and style permeate every note ever played by Duke Ellington. The Blues was such an integral element of Dinah's voice that there was simply no escaping it. Even though this is a crossover material, the sheer expressiveness of her voice, the incredible melismas, the emotionally devastating quality of her singing…this is one cascade after another of that immortal voice that will melt your heart within seconds. A great, great jazz vocals album, the kind of they do not (and cannot) make anymore. This may be your last chance to have Dinah Washington materialize in your living room, and sing only for you (and your significant other). Another Dinah album that is truly a monument of American vocal artistry.

CONDITION:
RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++). HOWEVER, THE FRONT, LAMINATED SIDE OF THE COVER IS BEAUTIFUL AND – IF GRADED SEPARATELY FROM THE REST OF THE COVER – WOULD DESERVE TO BE GRADED NEAR MINT.
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches / 10 to 15 centimeters)
- Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 1 and 2 inches / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)
- Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker (less than ¼ square inch in size)
- Cover has some tiny, faint writing on its back side (a small filing code written in one corner)
- Cover has two (2) quality control (inspection) stamps on the back panel
- Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant)(VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.
NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:
- No cut-out (drill) holes.
- No cut-out corners
- No saw-marks or indents
- No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
- No wrinkles or creases
- No yellowing from aging
- No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams
- No stains
- No mold or mildew spots
- No stickers or labels
- No water damage
- No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.
- No warping
- No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
- No bar codes
