First released in 1984, The Last In Line would mark the sophomore full-length from iconic heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio, following just one year on from his debut solo classic Holy Diver. Whilst originally serving as frontman for Elf and Rainbow, before later replacing Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath for 1980's Heaven & Hell and 1981's Mob Rules, following the latter, Dio would enlist the help of drummer Vinny Appice (who had replaced Bill Ward in Sabbath) as well as Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain and guitarist Vivian Campbell (session member of Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Thin Lizzy) while it wouldn't be until this second full-length where full-time keyboardist Claude Schnell joined the fold. Having to take over the macabre lyrical reigns of Ozzy when in Sabbath, Dio took inspiration from fantasy elements, boasting a self-professed love for all things Lord Of The Rings, D&D as well as Arthurian Tales, all of which inform his fantastical, whimsical approach to grandiose, cosmic storytelling. Reaching platinum in the US (before its predecessor) as well as silver in the UK, The Last In Line is an equally important heavy metal classic, further cementing the second wind rejuvenation of Dio as an incomparable force in the realms of rock and metal, while the title-track remains another 80s metallic masterwork.
