Dire Straits : Love Over Gold A1/B2 First Press

This first pressing is from a collection I purchased recently that has been so well preserved down the years and this is no exception!  On the Vertigo label this plays with stunning audio on both sides and as always I have played every track in full.

The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio confirms this vinyl has hardly been played and the superb visual quality more than back up that theory.  The vast majority of this classic album plays with Mint quality audio there is only very minimal interference, hardly any!

The cover is also in superb shape with barely any wear and the lyric inner is practically 'as new' also.

Play grading

The quiet intro on the classic 'Telegraph Road' plays beautifully with barely any 'background' - just a small number of light static ticks before the acoustic guitar comes in.  There is a minor amount of very light static for a few seconds during the next section and the first 'verse' plays with perfect clarity.  The depth of the audio here is so impressive and the solo that follows could not play any better.  It continues to play with sublime quality and the only interference are a couple of light clicks around the 8 minute mark.  The instrumental end section is outstanding.  You can turn it up to max and the playback is so strong and powerful with no distortion at all.  Just had to listen to it again and honestly the power and clarity here is out of this world!  I think Near Mint- is a fair assessment overall but it has to be said the vast majority is far better than that!

Again the quiet intro on 'Private Investigations' more than demonstrates how well this record has been cared for.  It plays beautifully with no intrusion and it continues in the same precise way with wonderfully clear audio.  The first acoustic section is 'as new' and the same applies to the verses.  The long quiet instrumental plays with impeccable clarity to the very end and this just has to be definitive version.  There is no intrusion on the audio whatsoever and has to grade as Mint- it is that good.  This is precisely why we listen to vinyl!  You cannot replicate the depth and warmth that you have here.

'Industrial Disease' on S2 has just one light static tick on the intro and then plays without fault to the final note.  The sonic quality is equal to that of an unplayed record and again Mint- is deserved.

The intro on 'Love Over Gold' has only a small number of light static ticks and the clarity remains very impressive indeed.  The first verse has no 'background' and continues to play with breathtaking audio.  Throughout the entire track I heard only a small number of (barely audible) ticks and just a little static on the very quiet fade out section.  I think Mint- is a correct grade for the bulk of the track but Ex+ for the final section.

'It Never Rains' has only minimal light static on the intro and then plays 'as new' for the remainder with literally no interference.  Each verse plays with stunning clarity and the instrumental section is more than equal to that with unrivalled power and depth.  A sensational 'final' section for sure with no distortion either.  Dare I say awesome!  This is obviously a record that has hardly been played and as always I have listened to every track in full so as to provide a comprehensive grading.  An Ex+ intro and then Mint- for the remainder.

Visual grading

The vinyl is visually stunning and still has a jet-black glossy sheen that looks 'shop fresh' to be honest.  It has no marks or scratches and only a handful of very light hairlines that are not easy to find as they are so faint!  The run out grooves are also super clean and the labels have no marking and very minimal spindle wear.

The Cover & Lyric Inner

The cover is in great condition and the only wear is a little creasing in the bottom right corner and one small very small scuff on the bottom edge.  Aside from that the edges are very clean, the spine is perfect and there is very little corner wear.  The opening edge is pristine apart from that minor hint of wear by the bottom corner.  Both the front and back cover are incredibly clean with only one faint indent line on the latter.  A fine example overall.  The lyric inner is so close to perfect with only one minor corner crease.
