Description
This is a very rare 7" of Public Service Anti-Drug Abuse spots put out by the Do It Now Foundation in the late 60s, featuring some really cool PSAs from the likes of Frank Zappa, Grace Slick, Peter Tork of the Monkees, John Sebastian, Eric Burdon, Stephen Stills, and Roger McGuinn. The beauty of these particular public service announcements was that each musician spoke in their own words, instead of reading a boring script that some "squares" wrote for 'em. A lot of the participants go for the scare tactic and play it pretty hard, notably Roger McGuinn, who puts it on the line when he says "If you really wanna die in about 5 from now, speed will do that for you." Frank Zappa, not surprisingly, gets the award for most creative adaptation, when he reprises his famous Suzy Creamcheese character for his PSA: "Suzy? Suzy Speedfreak? This is the voice of your conscience, baby...5 years and it's all over...you've already spent 10, 12 years in school and it was such a drag, wasn't it? Just think - it can all be over in 5 years if you start taking speed right now. Start today!" As a result, the PSAs really got through to the young generation back in the 60's. As the doitnow.org website very eloquently puts it, "These weren't slogans scripted by ad copywriters or bureaucrats. They were the authentic testimony of the counterculture itself and they spoke to the heart and head with humor and eloquence." Note that there is no MUSIC on this 7" disc, just spoken word PSAs. Original pressing from the Do It Now Foundation. Vinyl plays VG with crackle. Winning bidder pays $4.00 first class shipping in the US, $5 air mail to Canada, $6 air mail everywhere else. Paypal, Bidpay, cash, checks and money orders accepted. Please check out my other auctions for more obscure vinyl goodies, and I will combine shipping costs on multiple wins!
