D.O.A. "HARDCORE 81" LP Description:

You are bidding on a vinyl copy of an awesome hardcore record by D.O.A. entitled "HARDCORE 81."

This is the RAREST D.O.A. LP, their second release entitled "Hardcore 81" in NEAR MINT CONDITION. Only 3,000 were pressed and they are now even MORE rare than their first release! Along with the Subhumans, D.O.A. were, and are still, Canada's most powerful punk band! On this album, D.O.A. was: Randy Rampage (also of Canadian speed-metallers Annhilator!) - Bass & Vocals, Chuck Biscuits (also of Samhain, Black Flag, Social Distortion, Danzig, Circle Jerks and so many others!)- Drums, guitar and vocals, Dave Gregg - Guitar and vocals, Joey S**thead - Guitar and vocals. Tracy Marks plays piano on Unknown. This album was released on the legendary Vancouver Label Friends Records, Friends Records, which was VERY D.I.Y. cause they re-used surplus record jackets they obtained from other record labels. They printed over the original jackets with black ink, turned them inside out and pasted their covers on the other side. It was so neatly done, most people didn’t knew that!

The sleeve is in great condition with some gentle wear with crisp clean corners. The vinyl is in really clean condition. It looks perfect to me, but since I don't have a record player I can't offer any absolute guarantees, but it appears to my eye as super clean.

This Vancouver foursome was already a band to be reckoned with on their first three singles and debut, Something Better Change, but they went for the jugular on Hardcore '81, producing a rare and astonishing moment for the ages, a direct precursor to the Replacements' first LP torch job later that year. With the greatest drummer in punk history in Chuck Biscuits and an equally smokin' bassist in Randy Rampage, 1978-1982 D.O.A. had an unbelievably intense rhythm section to back the heavy, two-guitar power of Joey S**thead and Dave Gregg. With chops that actually bettered their primary influence, the Clash, and a take-on-all-comers attitude, these guys rocked -- and they knew it. With the exception of the much different, faster, more thrash Bad Brains debut, nothing else in the then-new hardcore genre came close to this wild LP. These 14 songs whip by quick with great thrill and tumult, an unusual, fun mixture of drinking buddy "I Don't Give a S**t" party tunes ("My Old Man's a Bum," "F**ked Up Baby"), wry, sardonic culture commentary ("M.C.T.F.D." aka "Middle Class Television Family Daughter," "Unknown"), and sobering sociopolitical outrage ("D.O.A.," "Smash the State," "Slumlord"). But what you can't forget are the machine-gun Biscuits fills, triggered by the merest hint of any looming chord change yet totally anchored on Rampage's booming bass. Or Gregg and Keithley's hot riffs that are so thick and yet slippery that they threaten to explode. Or Keithley's likable bear-growl vocals, as full of bonhomie good-guy spirit and wicked humor as they are with his sweat and vigor. Or songs so catchy, you want to sing them as loud as your lungs will take you. But like the '60s Who, '70s Clash, and '70s Buzzcocks (other bands of this same rank), they just don't come around often. Good thing they made Hardcore '81 before they left us.

Background: It wasn't long before punk rock expanded beyond just New York City, London, and Los Angeles during the mid-late ‘70s, as evidenced by the emergence of the long-running Vancouver, Canada based outfit, D.O.A. Originally formed in 1978, D.O.A. has been led from the beginning by singer/guitarist Joe Keithley, aka ‘Joey S**thead,' who has been joined by a wide variety of other bandmates through the years (including future Black Flag/Danzig/Social Distortion drummer Chuck Biscuits), although guitarist Dave Gregg was present for much of the hijinx up until 1990. The same year as their formation, D.O.A. issued a debut EP, Disco Sucks, before following it up with a pair of full lengths that many longtime fans consider D.O.A.'s classic recordings, 1980's Something Better Change and 1981's Hardcore ‘81 (a popular compilation of both releases plus early tracks reared its head in 1984, as Bloodied but Unbowed). Since the beginning Keithley has been unafraid to voice his political opinions (a renown D.O.A. slogan among their faithful is ‘TALK-ACTION 0'), which at one point, landed him in jail. D.O.A. would go on to sporadically issue albums throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s (including such highlights as 1982's War on 45, 1985's The Dawning of a New Error, 1993's Loggerheads, etc.). The group also found time to collaborate with another outspoken punk leader, former Dead Kennedys front man Jello Biafra, on 1990's Last Scream of the Missing Neighbors. Like Biafra before him, Keithley took the plunge and attempted to enter politics, running as a candidate in Canadian provincial and civic elections from the Green Party in 1996. Keithley also runs his own indie record company, Sudden Death Records, and issued an autobiography in late 2003, titled ‘I, S**thead: A Life in Punk.' D.O.A. continues strong to this day, as evidenced by such releases as 2002's Win the Battles. As a result of Keithley's hard work, D.O.A. is often name checked as an important influence by other hardcore/punk bands, including such notables as Green Day, the Offspring, Rancid, and Propagandhi, among others.
