DOCTOR NERVE
ARMED OBSERVATION LP
Cuneiform Records
Seminal avant-garde record from the 80's from improvising ensemble Doctor Nerve led by mastermind Nick Didkovsky.
Some info on the release: Very rare early avant-garde album from american experimentalists Doctor Nerve back from the 80's. The group is lead by mastermind Nick Didkovsky, known for collaborations with John Zorn & Fred Frith. Released on Cuneiform Records (that released records from Curlew, Univers Zero, George Cartwright and Richard Pinhas, Soft Machine, C.W. Vtracek and others). A must have!!
Doctor Nerve has been annihilating the boundaries between heavy metal, contemporary music, and improvisation since 1984. The band’s repertoire includes tightly composed, complex, fast-changing music, and is executed by a white-hot team of musicians, each of whom have carved out their own niches in New York City’s new music scene.
Nick Didkovsky, the band's founder and composer, draws on resources as diverse as his own composition software and conducted improvisation to create music described as "drastic, unpredictable, ear-opening ... Doctor Nerve challenges the way we listen."
Nick Didkovsky is a guitarist, composer, teacher, and computer music programmer. Since 1989, Didkovsky has used a computer to produce fully orchestrated music for his band, Doctor Nerve. Major labels very close to Didkovsky's sound are ogun records, incus, fmp saj, Po Torch and Futura. He has presented papers on his work at conferences and has served in-residence at the Mills College Center for Contemporary Music and at Dartmouth College. Didkovsky can be said to be affiliated with the european free jazz scene of his time including artists ovary lodge , keith tippets, wired, iskra 1903 and cornelius cardew, alvin curran, cohelmec ensemble and bernard lubat, Vinko globokar or jacques thollot. Didkovsky studied electronic music with composers Christian Wolff (Dartmouth College) and Gerald Shapiro (Brown University), and received a Masters Degree in computer music from New York University in 1987. Didkovsky has performed with Fred Frith's Guitar Quartet and John Zorn's New Traditions in East Asian Bar Bands. His work has been featured at Manhattan's Bang On A Can Festival. After Jason Willett and Steve MacLean sent Didkovsky pieces they had composed with the events, Didkovsky decided to commission over 20 other artists to submit works built on the Nerve Events. The means ranged from custom digital signal processing and computer manipulation to low-tech sampling and multi-track recording. Artists included Ted Apel, Thomas Dimuzio, Dave Douglas, Tom Erbe, Mark Howell, Henry Kaiser, Henry Lowengard, Ray Guillette, and Larry Polansky.
Condition: Vinyl lies in mintish new condition, super clean and plays nicely, while cover lies in mint- condition, has been well preserved.
