Description
ORIGINAL STOCK MUSIC ("Power Drill" and "Machine Room") from the 1966 William Hartnell DOCTOR WHO story The Tenth Planet (Serial DD). This was Hartnell's swangsong as the titular Time Lord and the character's first encounter with the Cybermen, emotionless silver giants from the planet Mondas.
This disc probably came from the BBC Gramophone Library at Television Centre. It was purchased in the early 1980s from Record & Tape Exchange in Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush, a short distance from TV Centre. The BBC Gram Library disposed of many surplus titles through this second-hand record shop and many of their discs carried "BBC Gramophone Library" labels. This one does not, but it is difficult to explain where else the record may have come from, since the BBC was the main local source of this kind of material.
Chappell Recorded Music Library discs were pressed in relatively small numbers as they were never offered for sale commercially. Produced expressly for use in the TV and film industries, the discs featured stock mood music which could be used with very few restrictions and was a cost-effective alternative to specially composed incidental music. With its limited budgets, DOCTOR WHO could not afford to commission special compositions for every serial, and regularly employed stock music as a cost-saving measure.
The record is in very fine condition and is free from scratches. It has only rarely been played.
