GRADAZIONE RIGOROSA - STRICTLY GRADED

Copertine e vinili sono visualmente gradati dopo un’attenta osservazione sotto la luce del sole fatta sulla mia terrazza a tetto. Nelle giornate grigie vengono controllati sotto una forte lampada alogena con l’aiuto di una lente d’ingrandimento. Tutti i i 33 giri in asta sono stati interamente ascoltati su un giradischi Rega Planar 3 fornito di una testina a magnete mobile Grado Statement 1. Per EP e singoli a 45 giri utilizzo un Thorens TD 166 BC con testina, sempre MM, Goldring 1006. Ritenendo che le abituali classificazioni quali Mint, Ex, Vg, ecc., ecc… siano poco significative per spiegare le reali condizioni dei dischi ed anche estremamente soggettive, precedo sempre tali classificazioni con una breve descrizione degli eventuali difetti che ho riscontrato, ad eccezione di Mint- che il più alto grado che conferisco a qualsiasi disco. Soltanto per le copie ancora sigillate all’origine utilizzo MINT/MINT.

Sleeves and vinyls are visually graded after a careful check in bright sunshine on my roof terrace. In the gray days I watch the records under a strong halogen lamp with the help of a magnifying glass. All LPs in auction have been fully heard on a turntable Rega Planar 3 with a moving magnet cartridge Grado Statement 1. I listen EPs and singles 45  rpm. on a turntable Thorens TD 166 BC with a MM cartridge Goldring 1006. Considering that the usual classifications such as Mint, EX, Vg, etc…, etc… are not significant to explain the real condition of the records in addition to a total subjectivity of opinion, I always introduce before these classifications a short description concerning any defects I have verified with the exception of Mint minus, the highest grade I declare. I use MINT/MINT exclusively for the still from factory sealed copies.

Note : composizioni, arrangiamenti e direzione orchestrale di Don Burrows. Diciotto brani strumentali interamente jazz compongono questo interessantissimo album. Don Burrows è certamente ben noto anche fuori dell'Australia per le sue collaborazioni con Gillespie, Grappelli, Oscar Peterson, Cleo Laine e tanti altri ancora. I migliori musicisti jazz di Sydney compongono il formidabile ensemble che esegue la colonna sonora. Ammirevole la loro genuinità espressiva che non vuole imitare nessun mostro sacro del loro mondo musicale ma anche evidente segno di grande personalità. Il film è un'amara love-story con diversi flashbacks del tipo "i ricordi dei momenti felici che abbiamo vissuto insieme" e dunque tenerezza e nostalgia non erano gli elementi più adatti per frenetici suoni jazz. Don Burrows risolve questi limiti con composizioni sofisticate prive di sonorità particolarmente violente e con andamenti lenti e moderati. Vasto numero di assoli specialmente di flauto, sassofoni e clarinetto. Ottima la collaborazione della sezione ritmica con un grande basso ed un bravo batterista. Chitarra, vibrafono non sono da meno così come tutti gli altri strumenti a fiato. Tutti i brani potrebbero essere degnamente nominati e senza timore di far brutta figura. Per necessità di sintesi mi limito soltanto a  " On the Make " (a4), brano dal ritmo veloce (è una delle poche eccezioni) con ottimi assoli di flauto, tromba e sax, grande drumming e bel supporto del basso. 

Notes : compositions, arrangements and orchestra by Don Burrows. Eighteen instrumental jazz tunes are included on this very interesting album. Don Burrows is certainly well known also outside Australia for his collaborations with Gillespie, Grappelli, Oscar Peterson, Cleo Laine and many others. The best jazz musicians in Sydney make up the formidable ensemble performing the soundtrack. It is admirable their expressive genuineness which does not try to imitate any legend of their musical world but also to be considered as a clear sign of great personality. The film is a bitter love story full of several flashbacks like "the memories of the happy moments we lived together" and therefore tenderness and nostalgia were not the most suitable elements for hectic jazz tunes. Don Burrows solves these limits with sophisticated compositions, without any violent sonorities and with the use of slow or moderate rhythmic developments. Large number of solos, mainly by flute, saxes and clarinet. Excellent support of the rhythm section with a great bass and a well-gifted drummer. Precious contribution from the appreciable presence of guitar and vibes as well as all other wind instruments. All tracks may be nominated worthily without any fear of giving a bad impression.  For brevity I mention only " On the Make " (a4), from the fast pace (one of a few exceptions) with outstanding solos by flute, trumpet and sax, great drumming and remarkable bass.
