The first great arranger in jazz history, Don Redman's innovations as a writer essentially invented the jazz-oriented big band with arrangements that developed yet left room for solo improvisations.

In 1957, Redman assembled a dynamite band and recorded a transcription album for Sesac in New York called Don Redman All-Stars. For those not in the know, a transcription recording was typically an oversized disc recorded exclusively for radio airplay. In this case, the transcription featured songs licensed by the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers (Sesac), a performing-rights organization akin to ASCAP and BMI. All of the Redman songs here would have been licensed by Sesac, and the transcription was offered to radio stations for broadcast. Sesac would then earn airplay royalties on the songs.

Redman's transcription was the first in a series that Sesac produced between 1957 and 1963 featuring Duke Ellington, Elliot Lawrence, Will Bradley, Bobby Hackett, Cannonball Adderley, Count Basie, Billy Taylor and Kai Winding. (A label today might want to feature them all in a set called The Complete Sesac Sessions.)

So who was in this '57 Redman transcription band? Take a deep breath: Charlie Shavers, Joe Wilder, Al Mattaliano (tp); James Cleveland, Sonny Russo, Bobby Byrne (tb); George Dorsey, Milt Yaner (as); Coleman Hawkins, Al Cohn, Seldon Powell (ts); Danny Bank (bar); Hank Jones (p); George Barnes (g); Al Hall (b); Osie Johnson (d) and Don Redman (percussion, vibes, whistling, arranger/conductor).

Redman's originals here swing, and his arrangements are dazzling and relentlessly interesting. The solos are all tasteful, particularly the ones by Coleman Hawkins.

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has three slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine .

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
