I got this at the Santa Monica estate sale of his wife Joanne McPhearson.
Here is an endoresement of Don Specht written by jazz great Shelly Mann on another Specht LP.

It amazes me that in today's abundant world of music how a specially talented composer, who makes a good living in music, can remain relatively unknown. Of course the one area in the business where this can happen is in the writing of commercials. The music may be beautiful, but it will go unheard-the music may be imagina tive, but it will go unheard-the music may be wailing, but it will go unheard. Unheard because it is "dubbed-down" under an announcer; unheard because few of us expect to hear beautiful or Imaginative or wailing music on a commercial, and unlike music for record albums, movies or TV shows, when the commercial's cycle is finished so is the music.

Don Specht has the special talent I refer to. He knows how to write for any size group of musicians in any style. He not only is a gifted composer but a gifted orchestrator as well. I am glad this record was put together so that it might save a small amount of his music from oblivion.

Musicians who make their living doing studio work do not often enjoy all the music they play. In fact it is more often just a job. You do the job to the best of your ability, go home, and most times cannot even remember the next day what the music was about. Don's dates are the rare exception where the musicians look forward to the session, enjoy the music, and are rewarded with a feeling of accomplishment. Shelly Manne
