Don Wilkerson was among the unsung heroes of the tenor sax. Although he backed heavyweights like B.B. King and Ray Charles, the improviser's own albums aren't nearly as well known as they should be. But those who were hip to Wilkerson swore by him, and one of his allies was alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. It was in 1960 that Adderley produced The Texas Twister, Wilkerson's first album as a leader. The tenor man (who was 27 at the time) shows a lot of promise on this album, embracing standards as well as bop-oriented material by Adderley, pianist Barry Harris, and obscure Texas musician Jim Martin. As its title indicates, The Texas Twister has a strong Lone Star influence. Wilkerson was born in Louisiana, but Houston, TX, was his adopted home -- and the Texas tenor tradition had a major impact on his playing. Like Arnett Cobb, David "Fathead" Newman, James Clay, and other tenor men who have lived in the Lone Star State, Wilkerson was a hard-swinging, aggressive player with a big, fat tone. That isn't to say that he wasn't influenced by saxmen who lived in other parts of the U.S. -- Wilkerson also inspired comparisons to tenor men who ranged from Chicagoan Gene Ammons to Los Angeles resident Wardell Gray. But it is safe to say that Wilkerson was very much a Texan at heart and that the Lone Star influence is hard to miss on this album (which boasts an all-star lineup that includes Nat Adderley on cornet, Barry Harris on piano, Leroy Vinnegar or Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums). Reissued on CD in 2001, The Texas Twister is recommended to anyone who admires the Lone Star school of soulful, hard-blowing tenor.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (MINOR scratch noted on "Where or When" not expected to affect playing)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)             The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split,  as follows:

-         Top seam: between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters.

-         Bottom seam: between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters.

-         Spine: between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters.

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams

-        Cover has two tiny, almost invisible, pinholes (or staple holes) in one corner. These tiny holes are NOT cutout holes.

-        Cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker, delicately masked (camouflaged) with a like-colored (purple) marker

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging  (nothing significant).

-         Cover has some light yellowish stains, probably from exposure to humidity.   (nothing significant) (less than 1 square inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
