RARE US MONO first pressing of Donald Byrd`s "Fuego" on Blue Note Records (July 1960). This offer does NOT include the original record cover; it is for the record only!
"The role played by Donald Byrd in the development of hard bop is often unfairly overlooked these days—as if the trumpeter's '70s forays into more commercial territory justifies expunging his earlier contributions from its history. Fuego, Byrd's third date for Blue Note, finds him at his very best, in the familiar company of altoist Jackie McLean, pianist Duke Pearson, bassist Doug Watkins and drummer Lex Humphries. Recorded in October 1959, the record reflects the contemporaneous influences of two of Byrd's earlier employers: Art Blakey and John Coltrane. The six Byrd compositions understandably lean primarily toward the former, Blue Note being the house that Blakey built, but the modal improvisations on some of the tracks forecast the growing importance of Trane's lessons. EX++ RECORD with hardly any signs of previous play.
- Near-perfect vinyl on both sides that plays MINT- almost throughout.
- Two superficial thumbnail scuffs (one on each side) are absolutely inaudible.
- A single small scratch (10mm long; in "Low Life") causes about 90 seconds of intermittent, lightest background clicks.
- Original first-pressing, custom-printed Blue Note Records labels with no spindle wear whatsoever.
- Deep groove vinyl, 182 grams in weight.
- The matrix stamps in the run-off grooves read "BN-LP-4026 A 9M" and "BN-LP-4026 B ", thereby denoting a US first pressing.
- Both run-off grooves include "RVG" (Rudy Van Gelder) stampers, as well as the Blue Note "Ear" logo.
- This copy of "Fuego" is fully certified to be an original US first pressing, issued in June 1960.
