Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three very light, fine and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. An absolutely stunning copy and hardly even played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 172 grams. Yes true, a massive super-heavyweight record. Any standard record over 160 grams is a heavyweight, when they go over 170 g, they are something quite special.

Brief Info: Donovan’s first live album that was recorded in the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California on September 23, 1967. A beautiful set and superbly recorded, Donovan is introduced prior to the beginning by his Father Donald. The backing band are high quality as well and this magnificent set of songs work perfectly. This first issue does it full justice and mention again for a massive pressing in the most wonderful of condition. A copy is archive quality for looks and most importantly, sound.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and this being very critical. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends via three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the ‘Patents pending’ text. This is a mono cover that has a STEREO NSPL cover-up sticker on the back.

Lamination & Front: The front is in wonderful condition with barely hints of ageing or wear. The laminate very shiny, fresh and clear with hardly any hint of friction rubs or dulling. All is fully adhered with any surface creases very few and faint. Any rim impression traces are purely that – traces and hardly even show. A hugely impressive front that blows away it’s considerable age.

Cover Back: Again very impressive with just a fine rim press near the 11 o’clock position, the only small reason this was not quite graded Mint(-). Any discolouration or grubbiness on this unprotected back panel is ultra faint and the stereo sticker is totally undamaged. It does have darkened edges though which will prove near impossible to avoid. The top and spine flipbacks are nigh-on perfect. The bottom one’s edges have a little faint burring on a couple of small areas but all are ultra clean and solid and again, few will even get close to them. A hugely impressive cover now into it’s sixth decade.

Top Edge: Ultra smooth and straight, fully laminated and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same, maybe a fraction less straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear, any thickening or burring hardly even registers. The manufactured trim mildly ‘rustic’ and not totally crisp which is nothing unusual on some covers of this era. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Little short of Mint. Solid, straight with no compression, the ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate and this remains very white and totally unaged or crushed.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is minuscule and all retain near mint pointed shape.

Cover Summary: Made in 1968, quite honestly it could have been made within the last few days – this is a beauty. Quite how this cover has survived without significant rim impression and ring wear, I am not sure. A record over 170 grams and massively thick will in most cases cause havoc to any vintage sleeve. This is magnificent with very few clues to it’s vintage. This should please most-all fans and collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: an incredibly fragile tracing paper style lined white inner that is in remarkable conditioin and guaranteed original. The very delicate lining is pristine as seen through two pristine window circles. No discolouration and no hard creases, just a hint of natural crinkle or a full Mint grading could have applied. All edges unsplit with NO repairs. I have rarely seen an inner of type and age in better condition – which will emphasise just how lovely the rest of the set is.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): or even better. A superb fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and with a weight few standard pressings could even dream of. Yes this feels like it’s pressed on marble with a weight exceeding 170 grams. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, ultra fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a gorgeous record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This record, clearly overlooked by the one and only original owner, plays up to it’s very high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. A high percentage of quite quiet songs, a top pressing is essential and Pye have come up trumps with this beauty. Few copies will even get close to matching, let alone outperforming this first issue I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled within in a non-smoking environment. I doubt if either cover or record has seen light-of-day for decades and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove beyond difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
