Label/Format: Pye (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive. Spindle marks are relatively few in number but mostly quite fine and some long. They are only seen under angled light and in terms of this mono record, all appears quite lightly played which is reitterated by very clean sound – this too on an acoustic album with nowhere to hide any audio blemishes.

Cat Number: NPL 18117.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 181 grams. An incredible weight for a standard issued record. Collectors will know early Pye records were always heavily pressed, but this is an amazing weight even by their standards. This slab will make belt driven decks struggle to get up to speed.

Rarity: Fairly scarce: even more so in very find conditions. Few of these avoided heavy use on heavy-tracking mono record players with very poor, noisy sound the obvious result.

Brief Info: This was the famed Scottish folk singer-songerwriter’s debut album, recorded when he was just 19. It sold well and peaked at No 3 in the UK album charts. Comparisons were obviously made to Bob Dylan as most of the songs feature just himself on guitar and harmonica. A very impressive debut with 9 of the twelve songs self-written including the superb ‘Josie’ and ‘Catch the Wind’, both hit singles. Never an easy one to find in fine condition – this was very much the era of the mono record and this album was not even issued in stereo. Although this one appears played a few times on the spindle evidence, this is light years short of excessive and this massively pressed (and tough Pye) record, still offers very impressive and mostly very clean sound. Without doubt one of the very best I have yet heard, so many of these lose their clarity and focus by thick heavy-tracking mono stylus grinding their way through the fragile grooves. The cover has survived in equally fine condition as has the fragile tracing paper lined inner. For fans of this evergreen folk artist, this vintage first album will never prove easy to find much better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably undergraded at that. A quite heavyweight single format with front laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The back panel is matt and smooth finished. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. Includes the plain white tracing paper style lined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: This cover is impressive – just think, this was in the shops even before England won the Football World Cup of 1966 – few will survive in much better condition than this. I think an extra (+) is really merited. The laminate is clean, clear and fresh with minimal traces of any friction rubs or dulling, even under light. All is fully adhered too with no lifts or blisters and with only a tiny few fine edge hairline creases with just three small and very light half moons away from. A mild record rim impression near the top edge, but with this monster weight pressing inside, is than any small wonder? The exposed white strip on the opening edge is clean with barely any hint of grubbiness or toning. A really impressive front that sets a very high standard.

Cover Back: The matt exposed back is equally impressive with any ageing or grubbiness very light and mild indeed. Barely any real wear or rubbing and the lack of ringwear great news. Quite how this one has remained without it is a near miracle. A 180 gram record will normally press and cut into card, so clearly this one has been treated well with no excessive pressure applied. Any handling traces to the black matt surface are few and very light indeed. The flipbacks are all undamaged, solid and still white. A few light hairline surface creases but little else. All the ends are clean with no grime-lines and the ends burr-free and crisp. A very fine back to complement the splendid looking front.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: And again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. These thicker card covers do not have the razor sharp finishing of the thinner ones, so a little rustic in appearance which is correct. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: solid, straight, uncompressed, the ends gently taper in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. Ultra fine rub traces near the ends being critical.

Corners: Minimal traces of any wear, odd tiny tip crease but little else. All very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage mid-60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: again for it’s fragility, worthy of higher. A plain white tracing-paper style lined inner – this delicate part pristine as seen through two immaculate window circles. Aged little and still clean with any discolour or toning traces mild and light. A little creasing on the back and some natural crinkle, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: again I state, probably better for a 46-year-old, acoustic mono record. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and massively pressed on what feels like marble. A copy modestly played, and I strongly suggest, with utmost care on worthy equipment. Any surface marks few, light and faint as seen critically under light. Most collectors will know the state such records are usually found in – this Donovan album was popular as the chart position reitterates. Many were played into submission and now unlistenable, especially on very revealing equipment. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super-heavyweight Pye mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, the sound remains sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Absolute silence on such a record is an almost unrealistic ask and the odd gentle trace is present along with the odd minor sporadic click. All part of the vinyl format, few will offer better sound, of that I am sure. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. With just the merest hints to remind the collector what it actually is they are actually listening too – nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
