HERE'S A CERTIFIED Jazz Classic from 1927, the great CHARLIE JOHNSON AND HIS PARADISE TEN. This incredibly hot band was top notch in Harlem in the late '20s, always out for blood, able to go toe-to-toe with Ellington, Chick Webb, Fess Williams or anybody else.
They do: "DON'T YOU LEAVE ME HERE." This side features the formidable JABBO SMITH (trumpet), CHARLIE IRVIS (trombone), and BENNY CARTER (alto sax), NOT to mention the sassy vocal by MONETTE MOORE!
I've always wondered how this plaintive whorehouse tune, composed by JELLY ROLL MORTON in about 1910, made it into the Charlie Johnson book!
The other side isn't bad either. It's the NEW ORLEANS BLUE FIVE, a swell one-session-wonder band from 1926, with TOM MORRIS (cornet), JOE "Tricky Sam" NANTON (trombone), BOB FULLER (soprano sax), MIKE JACKSON (piano) and BUDDY CHRISTIAN (guitar).
They play "SOUTH RAMPART STREET BLUES."
This original 1927 "Scroll" Victor 20653 is in solid V+ condition. Played with a 4.0 mil truncated elliptical stylus, the record has moderate surface noise, but no major distortion or needle damage, and the groove walls are essentially intact. Same applies to "South Rampart," which is a little cleaner, perhaps V++.

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will! Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.” I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.
